Agreed Lawrenson was fantastic and a class above Wardy who did not really make it at the next level. But do not forget Bobby Smith. He played as centre forward for England then three months later played for Brighton. How did that happen?
Bobby Smith was bought for £5000 from Tottenham, followed later by Mel Hopkins. The Bobby transfer really shook the football world. The deal was made possible because Gunn the bookies paid off Bobby's gambling debts (Allegedly) . I worked as doorman in a casino and Bobby often came in. He certainly made a difference to the team when all forwards/wingers reached double figures.W.Gould/H Wilkinson/Jack Smith/ W.Cassidy and Bobby.

Remembering the impact that signing Bobby Smith made, I wonder how we would feel today if we took Peter Crouch for a season from Spurs and would he have the same impact?

Crouch is not in the same league for fans appeal. Bobby Smith had been on TV for the best club in the land scoring for England and in the Cup Final. Bobby Z might have the same appeal.

Only saw Ward and Lawrenson play a couple of times when I first started following the Albion - Bobby Zamora has to be my favourite up to the current era in the time I have followed them although Dean Saunders was class as was another player that absolutely no one has mentioned . . . Garry Nelson.

Lawrenson - I remember the first season in Div 1, when we were struggling Mullery brought in Peter Sudderby to bolster the defence and pushed Lawrenson into midfield; he was still one of the best midfielders in the League. Pure class. I was gutted when he left.

Sent from - not telling as it upsets some people!

Why was Lawrenson so good. He was fast and he could catch almost any player if he (the opponent) got the chance, he could read the game and rarely made a mistake (not at all for the Albion, although he did get caught out once playing for Liverpool at the Goldstone). It was almost like an extra player on the pitch. He replaced Graham Cross who was arguable every but as good as Gordon Greer. He went to Deepdale and was never heard of again.

I always felt sorry for those that partnered Lawro in defence... I remember Winstanley used to get a right pasting from us lot because he wasn't on the same planet as Lawrenson.

I remember David Lacey writing in the Grauniad saying the local bookies held a service of thanksgiving when Bobby Smith signed for the Albion!

And He regrets it BIG TIME, i think thats why he doesnt talk about his time with us with any fondness ????????????

I'm a wardy fan but Lawrenson was absolute class, he made so many forwards look mugs. Master of the well timed tackle, sliding tackles and even tackles from behind without fouling. He would normally snuff out opposition attacks then turn and inspire the next attacking move for us.

Could have got even more out of him but for that broken arm. Unlike Ward he went on to have a great career at the top.

Very shrewd business by Mullers. If Lawro played today he would be worth a fortune and probably in Bracelona's defence. Could have been a legend for England.

Shrewd business to buy him but it was the sale of Lawrenson to Liverpool by Bamber that led to Mullery leaving!
