The Large One said:I'd have said that The Jam were more influenced by The Clash than the Who - even if they never really acknowledged it. But to compare The Jam and The Beatles is folly. You can compare individual tracks, but not their careers. For me, the best Jam songs are better than the best Beatles ones, but the Beatles were more consistent in quality.
Richie Morris said:Ok, the beatles had more mediocra songs over a number of years, but the jam quit while they were ahead. For me that means something. It means they cared enough to not produce shit songs. In the time they were together the jam were the biggest british band in the world and had 20 odd hit singles. Not bad considering their age.
Richie Morris said:All I know is that 'waterloo sunset' is better then anything Lennon ever wrote. If 'days' was naff..what would you classify the majority of the beatles records as?
I forgot David Bowie. Possibly the most influencial artist in this country.
Icy Gull said:My, badly put, point was that the Beatles WERE groundbreaking. It may not seem so now but you had to be there when albums like Revolver, Sgt Pepper's and the White Album came out to appreciate that. The Stones were a band whose music I preferred but even they were prompted and led by the Beatles. Listen to their very own and inferior version of Sgt Pepper's, At their Satanic Majesties Request.
To compare the Jam to the Beatles is like comparing the current Leicester side to the current Arsenal, a massive gulf in class, although Leicester are indeed a fine team.
