bands that should have had much more success

I was listening to XTC this morning on the train. It struck me just how good they really were. I think the lead singer suffered from chronic stage fright which hampered them but they should have been huge.

Waterboys should also have gone on to great things after their To the Sea album and I'm amazed Black Rebel Motorcycle Club have never been bigger. Hip hop wise if the 2 live crew hadn't been so damn rude then their Miami sound of stripped back and minimal hip hop would have seen them go mainstream.

Any more you guys can think of?

I'd agree with XTC. 'Dear God' is one of my favourite tracks, ever.

People other than just students should have listened to Echo and their Bunnymen in the late 80's POMP.

The Go-Betweens should have reached a far wider audience...

the Sundays made one perfect album and then disappeared. Durutti ColumN bubbled away for years without breaking the big time.

Echo and the bunnymen did make it big though, HKFC. Admittedly, they dropped off the radar until the Evergreen album which is awesome.

I liked Mumm-Ra, a band from Bexhill. Released one album which I really liked, then split up. Shame really, had a lot of potential IMO.

My fav band Squeeze deserved more success than they did. Strange as it may seem most of their singles didn't get into the top 40, hence their greatest hits being called 45's and under. How Goodbye girl only got to number 63 and tempted to number 41 beats me.

In parts of the States they were huge live wise, i.e selling out Madison Square Garden yet their only hits there were Hourglass.

Perhaps being on the same record label and sharing the same manager as the Police had something to do with it.

Share sentiments about XTC as well
