I think Peter Costello's a fascist wanker, to be honest. And he's talking crap about Australia being secular. Everyone in power is either an Anglican or a Catholic. The two factions tend to dislike each other.

There are plenty of religious schools, as well.

Lebanese is not a language.

Was out with a crowd of Lebanese last night. Christians I may add. They can party and as for the girls.....:p :p :p. Very classy lot.

They generally spoke arabic but some opted for English and even French.

Speaking to a guy who got married 2 days after the war started and had to return to the UAE via Syria (he had vowed never to set foot in the country but ended up spending part of his honeymoon there!!).

Also this posh bird with dual UK/Leb nationality who was on the evacuation boat to Cyprus!!

I'm proud that, as a nation, we're not as racist as Australia.

I never presumed Australia had anymore of a racist problem than Britain but 3 people in the last year have told me it is the most racist country they have ever been to. Still I will wait and see for myself if I ever go.

Bit of a clueless comment that I'm afraid...Britain has a racist problem, as does Australia

Of course, but it's much more open in Australia - you know, the government, the media, the average man on the street.

All the time we have major terrorist attacks racialism will remain worldwide.

What can you do ? The other day a young coloured chap was searched in front of everyone at the gateline at Victoria Underground. It looked a bit OTT being surrounded by four policeman and I suspect the potential issue was he was carrying a rucksack.

That's no way to treat Sir Trevor McDonald, he deserves better.

Australia is one of the most openly racist countries I've ever had the misfortune of visiting. The way they treat the INDIGENOUS aborigines(?) is truly disgusting.

I'd have to agree with Wozza. It's not denying there is racism here in Britain, to say that it is far more overt in Oz. You run into it quicker as a visitor.

Whether their form or our slightly more hidden form is better or worse is another question.

When we lived in South Africa, we were told, "if you didn't like the place, then go back to your own country"

So we did.

I have worked in Perth, Sydney and Melbourne. Can't speak for anywhere else, but this would be my take;

You have your fair dinkum Aussies [your Alf Stewarts if you like]. Mostly from a British descent. Some harbour barely disguised rascist attitudes to the large immigrant populations of Lebanese, greeks, indonesians, etc. Some it has to be said, do not.

The Italians, various Slavs, etc, who make up a significant portion of the population are pretty much completely accepted, bar a few jokes [There was an Italian, a Greek, and a .....]

The Alf Stewarts however, to a man, have a massively ingrained racist attitude to the aborigines. They geniunely see them as sub-human, and if it were not for an awareness of how the outside world was watching on, they would have been eradicated decades ago.

I have to stress that this is not just their Looneys and Oceanics either, it is all of them. Of course some are overtly racist, whereas some are quiet about it.

Here is a perfect example - a cousin of my wife. She is a lovely girl, university educated, [she is an architect, in fact] 27 years old. Irish parents but grew up in Australia, with a few summers in Ireland. She is completely liberal in her attitudes, and is now married to a great bloke, from Indonesia.

However, even she, the embodiment of modern Australia, cannot deny her contempt for the Abbos. Her take on it is that everything the government does for them is a waste of time and resources. 'All they want is to sit on their porches, drink and beat each other up'. She does not feel that any wholescale integration into society is either possible or beneficial.

They honestly consider them less than fully human.

Was in a bar on a train in Australia and got talking to some Aussies. They quite openly were talking of Muslims as 'Towel heads' and 'Bomb chuckers', and I really couldn't believe how direct and open they were about it. One in the bollocks for the PC brigade I thought at the time.

I don't mind Muslims, but I'd draw the line at any child of mine marrying an Aussie.
