As a kid, what did you stand on at the Goldstone?

I remember my first "North Stand Game" more than my first time at the Goldstone.
1972 vs Villa, 2-1 Willie Irvine screamer. The old div 3, it was on MOTD & we had about 32,500 ish there.

It was absolutely f***ing fantastic! :clap2:

I remember that goal as if it were yesterday. I was standing right behind the south goal.

There was a lot of interplay between almost all of the Albion defenders and half-backs in the build up to the attack. I can see John Templeman shaking off a tackle and scything the ball through to Willie Irvine just inside the box. There was a little shimmy from Irvine as he sent his defender the wrong way, and then he let fly. The Villa fullback, Charlie Aitken, had positioned himself on the goal line, up against the right hand post. The ball scorched past him, over his head, and the net bulged.

The goal was 'goal of the month' on BBC TV and became the runner up for the 'goal of the season'.

It was Jock Stein that gave it all the votes. The rest of the panel did not recognise it as an exceptional combination goal in its time.
Or were snobbish about giving the best goal to a Division Three team which were not meant to be on "Match of the Day" in the first place.

If we had Willie Willie Irvine in our team instead of Gordon Smith .....

1971 was the year that Redknapp and Bournemouth, or Notts County were running away with second place behind Villa, but got pipped at the post by the Albion.

Always the North Stand, although when I started going it always down the front. As the years went by I graduated to three quarter ways up, just to the left of the goal.

Those were the days.... :clap2:

always the northstand for me too
started at the front, as i got older and taller i ventured further back. made sure i stood in front of the blue barriers so i never got squashed in the rush forwards. can remember darts being thrown at palace fans and some of them being escorted by the st johns ambulance with 3 darts in their to the chants of "180". went onto the pitch when we played sheff wed and won 5 - 3. had a lot of fun at the away games, bonfire at peterbrough, free shopping in the chesterfield market etc etc good times

I used to stand on the terraces with my dad and brother. Whenever we scored, they used to throw me in the air.
Question is did they try and catch after throwing you!!!

Meopham, Kent.
I did the rounds. Started on the east, usually in the south east corner, near the floodlight, although occassionally stood in the north east if my brother took me.
From about 12 I stood on the West, south, as near to the bench as I could get, herad stuck under those two bar they replaced the fencing with.
Then from about 15 it was the North.

Marvellous scenes, oh how I miss The Goldstone Ground.

... and terraces in general actually.

I desperately want terracing back, but do you think, realistically, it'll ever happen? There are all these surveys, fans forums and consultations etc, but are the footballing bodies really just humouring us?

I used to sit on top of that big silver metal box in the South-East corner. I think it was the generator for the floodlights. It didn't half hum anyway.

Don't knock it. The vibration pulsing and throbbing through my fresh young hairless buttocks was highly invigorating on a chilled winters night.

Sure it was. So you`re the one who used to make the most noise at the Goldstone!!

Wandered into the Gldstone sometime in the summer of 76 and found an old R.Whites lemonade crate (painted orange for some strange reason) and thought how good that would be to stand on and see a game for a change rather than tryng to balance on the ledge that the old Radio Brigton white commentary shed stood.

Mind you, that was when I used to get into the ground at around 1.30 to try and bag a decent view.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh memories

It now sits proudly in my side passage enjoying its long and well earned retirement.

Just think of trying to get it in past one of todays stewards......
