Albion chief-executive Martin Perry added, "The award is a tremendous achievement and just shows that, contrary to Lewes District Council's opinion, the club delivers significant benefits to the community.

"This has been recognised by judges from a variety of walks of life, including people from outside football representing the media and international businesses.

"Our work has been acknowledged at a national level and it makes a mockery of Lewes's insulting and baseless comments."

Albion today issued a scathing attack on Lewes District Council after they branded the club's work in the community as being 'so small for any meaningful use.'

Lewes also claimed Albion's community work was 'very minor? with only few, and even then limited, benefits accruing to the wider community'.

Lewes made the demeaning comments in their written submissions to Ruth Kelly as part of their objection to the proposed Community Stadium at Falmer.

The comments come in stark contrast to last night's Football League Awards, when the Seagulls were voted Community Club of the Year.

Albion chairman Dick Knight said, "It was no coincidence that eight years ago we named our vision for a new stadium for Brighton & Hove the Community Stadium. We knew then the importance of the Albion in our local community.

"To have received the national award of Football League Community Club of the Year is a fantastic achievement in our present circumstances. It exposes the blinkered and selfish opposition of Lewes District Council for what it is. They are denying the wider community, including the people they supposedly represent, the right to a stadium where we can truly fulfil the potential of this club as a power for good.

"I am proud of Steve Ford and his team, who have put the politicians of Lewes to shame."

You know, I'm quite glad LDC made those comments to Ruth Kelly. Deriding a National Award of recognition for work in the community can only go to show what a bunch a narrow minded killjoy twattytwats they really are. Hopefully Ms Kelly will see straight through them. Bit of an own goal there LDC I feel.

Full coverage of the award needs to be made available to Meridian and BBC South Today, even tho only those Albion fans who live in Gillingham or Slough will ever see the report. Those of us who live in BN1 will have to hope the presentation was made in the New Forest.

I have just sent another e-mail to LDC. See below.

Dear Mr Neighbour,
You may have noticed that, at last night's prestigious Football League Awards ceremony, Brighton & Hove Albion won the award for Community Club of the Year.
The only enemies that the club has had are local: Bill Archer and David Bellotti (what do you know, another Liberal Democrat); the man who has taken his action right up to the House of Lords in a spiteful attempt to get removed the two thousand additional seats that were installed at Withdean last season; and, that great enabler of sport in Sussex, Lewes District Council.
At least the club's good works are being recognised nationally.
Yours sincerely,
Darren Wilson

Do Lewes District council and Falmer Parish council actually have any meaningful use?

Someone said earlier in the thread that it's on Sky Sports on Thursday.

Un-f***ing-believable gibberish from Lewes District Council there. Not only do they deride the importance of the Albion in the community, the also believe urban re-generation and social inclusion are not in the national interest. Seeing as they have no idea of any sense of community or of what community actually is - who the f*** gave them the right to make any comment on it?

at least that Pompey scum didnt get it

Quite possibly because it was the "Football League" awards - and therefore Pompey would not have been eligible?!

In addition, the fat, tattooed, drunkard is currently a huge embarassment to Pompey, as he has been banned from some grounds for drunkenness, and technically should have been banned from all grounds for an alcohol-related offence. It was only the personal reference from Mandaric which kept him out of the deep shite. He is not particularly liked at Pompey, outside his little "crew" of impressionable single-brain-celled neanderthals.

This is excellent. Bit of a bastard that it came so soon after the deadline for submitting further evidence to Kelly. But I don't suppose Lewes Lib Dems' spineless, spiteful, groundless attack will make much difference anyway.

The Albion can comfortably slot it into their response to Lewes' *cough* evidence before Ruth Kelly makes her mind up. And, as Gubber would say, the club will go LARGE on this.

Christ on a f***ing bike. Even Baker is more positive than this.

Given that De Vecchi and her mange infested lackeys read this site I'd better be careful what I say; but one day, vengeance will be ours.

That is an absolutely disgraceful statement and ought to be used in publicity during the forthcoming election campaign.
