Bess’s “all round ability” certainly came to the fore. Out first ball.

Why on earth did we pick him? Not even a regular starter for Somerset despite the raging turners at Taunton.

Meanwhile an exciting leggie like Parkinson doesn’t get a look in despite being chosen as one of the two first choices to go in the first place.

Muddled, misguided thinking. Still at least Root and Silverwood didn’t pick their Yorkshire mate Bairstow again....

Don’t rate Giles, don’t think Silverwood is up to it and Root isn’t leading well either.

If we can get a few more runs on the board in the morning - 280 wouldn't be disastrous. SA will feel they've let us off the hook a bit.

"While there's still Pope, there's hope!" :salute:

Ollie Pope looked like a confident, accomplished middle order batsman. At least that is one positive but the top of the order could have done a Burns innings to build upon.

Let's hope our bowlers have a good day.

Some catch from Stokes that, South African batsman shot choices almost as bad as ours.

Test match batsman nowadays seem to have real issues with leaving the ball, all 3 South African wickets and many of England’s wickets are just nothing pushes at balls that are on about 7th stump line. Very poor application, makes you wonder about the long term future of test match style cricket.
