I am a little surprised that once again we have given air protection to Isreal downing Iranian missiles. The US I can understand more because of their geo-political posture but us? Did the French, Germans, Italians also partake? I do appreciate that this clusterfuck is largely of our very historic making, but can't really see why, unless, a big unless, we are really worried about Iranian aggression? Please I'm not after a binfest, it's just a question

Not at all.

Especially as I am currently in Cyprus, though fortunately not too near to Akrotiri base.

But I'm not happy that our government is so adamant about supporting Israel unconditionally.

ATTENTION: thousand word response incoming from @Zeberdi incl. half a dozen links from his extensive database of links. Sound the alarm!
Not from me.

Just wondering why this needs a separate thread when @Bozza just combined all the threads to do with the middle east into one thread yesterday?

Cos it's a very separate conversation, nothing to do with the war, it's our part of it I'm interested in. It doesn't sit easy with me

I did a Roger Moore eyebrow raise when I heard the navy and the airforce gave no assistance in shooting down incoming rockets, why are we even talking about helping out then? What are they protecting?

I can indeed understand Jewish Brits taking a very supportive view, and why not. But when did it become Govt policy?
Really. Then you ’understand’ nothing afaic.

So the fact that I am Jewish you assume that I ‘very much’ support our getting involved in a Middle Eastern conflict to support Israel embarking on a regional conflict in the ME?

Maybe you should read some of the comments I have posted on the ME thread.

I am not for or against any of this because I’m Jewish.

A very loaded question, of course with bias and assumptions.

Getting to the nitty gritty. The Jews have lived in that part of the world for thousands of years, predating other current faiths and as long as any other race. After being mass murdered in pogroms for 2,000 years they started returned to their homeland before WW2, the Holocaust the final understandable jolt.

To me the problems predate the lazy blame the UK in 1945 argument. There was a growing murder Jews movement in the Middle East pre WW2.

Iran - a disgusting regime that murders dissenters, organised rape and murder by the police of women, women treated like dirt. In an alliance with Russia and North Korea to murder Ukrainians. With no connection to events in Israel, Iran have for years often attacked global shipping.

I'm pro anything to stop their missiles, including attacking the source.

Finally, I believe in a two state solution.

I didn't say that at all, I do have many Jewish friends who have said otherwise. I have strong Jewish links myself, so please don't make this about you, I'm questioning UK govt policy when I never knew we had one in this direction, that's all. Chill please

I can't think of a good argument that Iranian missiles should be allowed to land. Personally I'm pleased the US/UK helped here.

Whether the UK gets involved has everything to do with the war. You can not separate ‘our part’ in it - we are up to our necks in it already - Israel has only pushed Hamas and Hezbollah to the brink because Israel, the US and the UK are strong allies and because we have very strong strategic interests in making sure Israel isn’t destroyed by Iran-backed forces in the region.

The US will not refuse to back Israel, (it would be a political suicide for any president that does) and we would not do it here.

It is in no one’s interest in the West that Israel should fall to the Axis of Resistance any more than it is in any of our interests that Israel leads the West into a confrontation with Iran and maybe Russia, because Israel has a far right leader who is trying to save his political skin by putting Israel on a war footing with every Country in the ‘axis of evil’ (Netanyahu’s expression).

You responded to this completely uncalled for and unprovoked ad hominem post by THPP

Of course you were talking about me - You don’t speak for British Jews nor do I and you don’t speak for me so please don’t presume what I think.

(And don’t tell me to ‘chill’ - I am quite chilled thanks and don’t try and gaslight me by saying posts aren’t about me when they use my name )

And there we go with the obligatory thousand word response. Just can't help himself, even tho for just about everybody it's just the usual TL;DR :lolol:
