3-2 win for Reading City...3-0 up at half time and cruising. Second half Ardley United were a completely different team and deserved at least a draw. Ardley United manager given a red after the game. I assume he was telling the ref what he thought about him not awarding a stonewall penalty...the lino had a clear view too.

Two bus stops with my free bus pass (or ten minutes walk pre-arthritis!) and I arrived at Saw Mills End, between an ugly Ibis Hotel and an ugly 70s office block. There were some nice trees down one of the sides though. Four quid to get in (with OAP concessions), three quid for a burger or hot dog, and a tiny stand two seats deep and about 30 yards long. Go where you please, and a nice height of railing to lean on!
So to the match - Winslow United started at great speed and aggression, satellite balls straight up to the front; perhaps not the best tactic, as the Longlevens team, although looking slighter and younger, seemed pretty good at heading themselves; the sort of game that makes you wonder about long term damage from heading - some of those balls were travelling a great distance at a great height before being met by someone's bonce! Longlevens seemed to have weathered the storm - then of course, Winslow scored!
The second half, the visitors seemed the more tired of the two teams, and Longlevens were keeping the ball down, especially building (but quite quickly) from the back - maybe three or four passes before sending it down the wings. The match was getting a little bit niggly at times, but the ref seemed to do a pretty fair job of keeping control. Longlevens could have had a penalty - I thought they should have, but, obviously, no replays or anything - and, glory be NO VAR! Two minutes from the end, Longlevens got a well-deserved equaliser, and that was it. A pleasant afternoon in the sun for us, and a replay at Winslow for the teams.

My first visit to Gorings Mead and I was definitely impressed with the ground and set up, a very good description on post #77, nothing really I can add about the ground.
YMCA turned up and Newhaven didn’t, unfortunately Newhaven’s keeper had to go off just before half time due to an accidental collision with an opponent. Newhaven were already losing 2-0, not sure he would have kept the score down if he’d not got injured.
Must admit I left early at 5-0 but due to the keeper getting injured plus other stoppages it was still after 5pm when I left.

Steyning 4 Hilltop FC 0

After a difficult opening 30 minutes the Barrowmen took control off the game and in the end it was a comfortable afternoon that included a penalty save from the Steyning keeper and a Hilltop red card.

Interesting club Hilltop. Apparently from Wembley but groundsharing with Beaconsfield and a team made up of players of Somali extractions

Crawley Down next round. But before that it’s our first Isthmian match home to Merstham next Saturday.

Hassocks 2 Haywards Heath 3
After back to back wins to start their league campaign, it was a slightly under par performance from Hassocks against their Mid Sussex rivals Haywards Heath in the FA Cup extra preliminary round.
Hassocks took the lead within the first 5 minutes through a lovely volley from Al Fair at the back post...although when I spoke to him after he admitted to shinning it. Heath came back to lead 2-1 at half time.
Second half and Hassocks equalised after a bit of a scramble in the box, before Heath scored in the 89th minute to make it 2-3. There was still time for Hassocks to miss (or rather have saved) a penalty in the 99th minute.
All the magic of the cup.

What a brilliant cup tie as a neutral yesterday.
First time visit to The Beacon and was hugely impressed with the welcome and organisation on arrival. Such a picturesque backdrop against the South Downs. Cracking playing surface, with loads of good viewing points. Would definitely recommend a visit to any county local hoppers.

Hassocks competed very well against their ‘richer’ neighbours and unlucky fore the game not to go to a replay. Ex Albion Darren Budd was an absolute engine in the middle of the park.
Lovely first goal for Hassocks, delightful ping from the left back for the winger to run onto, to then put a pin point cross for the scorer to ‘shin’ into the net.

Will visit The Beacon again for sure. Cracking set up from one of the smaller local league clubs.

I hope you enjoyed your visit yesterday, (result apart of course!), we are quietly impressed with our surprising start to the season, a 5-0 demolition of Little Common in our first league game last Saturday, followed of course by or victory yesterday.

119 fans witnessed the match, and l was putting out the cones closing off the car par,k due to it being chock full by 2.30!

More excitingly for us is the visit of local rivals Broadbridge Heath for our FA Cup 2nd qualifying round tie on Saturday week, 17th August.

Those of you from this part of Sussex who' aren't travelling up to Liverpool, welcome to come and watch!

Merstham won 7-0 at the weekend it could be a toughy, how do you think Steyning will fare this season, had quite a few departures.

Not a classic. Very niggly game which was very start stop throughout. Best bit of football in the game lead to Crowborough's goal. Cracking turn from Forster took two defenders out of the game. He shot from the edge of the box which was only be parried by the keeper leaving an easy tap in. In a change from the last couple of games it was more of the visitors doing the attacking and Crowborough sitting back. The defence held strong until mid way through the second half where Bearsted got a deserved equaliser.

The rest of the game was just a collection of fouls and yellow cards for both sides. Daft IMO we've got to do it all again tomorrow when replays have been scrapped further on through the tournament.

Just one more thing to add is Crowborough had a 17 year old local lad make his full debut at centre half. Josh Turner. He was on the books at the Albion until a couple of years back and was at Hastings last season. Apparently Hastings have scrapped their U23s this season so Hastings loss is Crowborough's gain. He deservedly won MOM and had a superb game. Certainly one to watch.

I think he's actually 19 - born April 2005 (left Albion after his U-14 season of 2018-19).

I’m not sure anyone knows. From the outside if you lose your management team and best player (Harry Shooman) it looks like an upward hill. But Gerry Murphy knows his stuff, and the core of the team has been retained and added to, so whilst a difficult season is anticipated we live in hope.

Massive leap in admin and facilities required moving up to the Isthmian. Before you start thinking about what’s on the pitch. It’s interesting for sure.

The Guvnor giving up his beer money that day will never arrive! Mind you he has told me he is sticking around for our FA Cup tie, and not travelling north to Goodison.
