On the one hand I think we've been lucky (several times) on the other I'm thinking Southgate #footballgenius

On balance Southgate has to take credit, shirly?

He certainly does something right and hasn't deserved the beer throwing etc.

Credit to Southgate for putting Watkins on.

He hadn’t played any minutes since the Denmark game. Toney has been preferred since.

But he was chosen tonight and there must have been a reason behind that decision.

The refs have been kind to England so far these Euros
Do you know what, yes I agree - but we’ve been absolutely robbed in prior tournaments with truly some of the worst game-changing officiating against us. A mixture of very harsh decisions and outright robberies against us.

We’ve had a couple of decisions go our way this tournament but I don’t feel guilty at all about that. It’s our turn for some marginal calls for once.

and so every manager since Alf Ramsey up to Southgate were all unlucky?
I do think England up to Southgate have always had something go badly wrong in tournaments, you could call it unlucky.

Southgate however has had incredible luck and long may it continue.

He certainly does something right and hasn't deserved the beer throwing etc.

Even if we'd been knocked out against Slovakia, having been below the standard we should be, he obviously didn't deserve beer thrown at him.

I think we are right to criticise his management when we're not playing well enough. Why was Trent suddenly tried in midfield in this tournament, but not in the friendlies before? It's very difficult to understand the lack-lustre performances at the start of the tournament, compared with the game tonight. We were lucky that Denmark didn't beat Serbia, putting us on the wrong side of the competition (we could have faced Germany, then Spain, then France, and then the Netherlands - good luck there).

Now we need to see if he can get us playing well against Spain. If we lose, but look like their equal, I won't be unhappy with him staying on. If we outplay them (yeah right) and win, I'll very much want him to stay on. If we had been great all tournament I'd be wanting him to stay on, but that hasn't happened, so it's down to the last game.

actually I didn't think it was a pen but you make your own luck. It was harsh but if you have your studs high in the penalty area, going into contact you are asking for trouble. The thing I didn't get was how the ref didn't see what happened?, everyone knew what happened, VAR made him change his mind, refs need to back themselves more

He should get a lot of credit for bringing the squad together and changing the toxicity of the past.

Maybe that's why the team keep digging him out of holes.

It looked so familiar, Koeman tactically turning the tables with Southgate having no clue how to answer and I think there was only one winner in extra time but Watkins to the rescue.

They haven't generally had either the players he has, or the luck. But some of the time we have just had poor managers. The worst being the wolly with the brolly.

In 86 I seem to remember us not playing well until we were behind. But obviously losing to the druggie cheat was unlucky.
In 88 we were poor (although we were in a group with the top 2 teams I think)
In 90 we were unlucky with the Paul Parker deflection
92 & 94, shit manager
In 96 we shouldn't been knocked out by Spain and were lucky to get to the semis, so I'll ignore the fact we were a match for Germany.
In 98 Beckham shouldn't have been sent off. We were unlucky.
In 2000, should've done better and was disappointing.
In 2002, Sven was poor for not getting us top of the group, so the our afternoon game in the heat against Brazil was just about impossible for us.
In 2004 I think we unlucky when Rooney had his foot broken against Portugal (think we were winning). Rooney was amazing until then.
In 2006 against Portugal again, the cheating shit got Rooney sent off.
In 2010 we weren't good, but we were robbed by the lack of goal line tech. We should have been 2-2 at the break against a great counter-attacking team.
2012 - er, I don't remember
2014 & 2016 - Roy was an awful manager.
Since then we've had Gareth, and the best results in my time. But I've generally not seen us play as good football as in several of the other years.

It isn’t all just luck but that has been a fairly big contributing factor to our success.
And to our past failures. But only English people engage in self loathing of national achievements to the degree we do. Maybe it’s the weather. Or listening to bitter Jocks and Taffs too much. Regardless, every team I’ve every seen win something has been ‘lucky’ so it’s nice to recognise we can be too.

You make your own luck, if you have more possession you will get more opportunities and the chance of luck is greater

Same as if you make silly errors you get punished like Gary Nevile giving away a silly pen v Romania in the last minute or Gerrard carelessly heading back not realising Henry was there. What they never say about Maradonna's handball is why did Hodge hoof it back into his own penalty area? If you cut out the silly errors and naive play the less bad luck you will have. Southgate has adressed that, it has nothing to do with just being lucky

remember when we were 4-1 down to Germany and Fabio Crapello brings on Emile Heskey in the 85th minute? That was after we finished 2nd in a group containing USA, Algeria and Slovenia? That deserves criticism

There are so many examples of inept management decisions from former England managers so Southgate does not deserve anything like the stick he gets
