That is not a deal I'd want to make. In 2 years time he'd be worth a LOT. We would be mad to let it get to the point where he could leave on a free.

Far from ideal, but if he won't sign a deal (not that I know that he won't) there's not much we can do.
Bissouma's interview yesterday was for me ABSOLUTE confirmation that he will leave next summer. No Albion fan should be bitter abut it - the guy is too good to be playing in the bottom half of the PL, and we are lucky that we get to enjoy him for one more season, when he could have agitated for a move this summer, to take a next step that he is clearly ready for.
Would be fantastic for the club if he would sign an extension (ie a higher wage for this season, with a promise to let him move next year at at the right price). It would be beyond naive to imagine any extension would indicate a significantly longer stay with us, sadly!

No one wants to pay money for a defensive midfielder.
Just look at Kante who was instrumental in Leicesters PL victory. Chelsea bought him for £32m.
Clubs know that Brighton deservedly want a lot of money for Bissouma but they are not willing to pay it.
Besides getting a great defensive midfielder, there are no other pros with signing one. Wont give the club any new fat sponsorships. Wont sell any merchandise. The fans are unlikely to appreciate it as much as they should: plenty of people have no idea of what happens in between the two penalty areas. Just look at the "Player of the season" thread here from this spring. Bissouma made world class performances week out week in, yet... "hmm... I'll vote Joel Veltman". The people who are in charge of the bank accounts in various clubs are often no more knowledgable than that. Can he score a goal? Great, I pay up. Can he clear the goal line? I'll pay up. "Midfielders... what do they really do?".
Hopefully this means the decrease in value is also less than in other positions.
Selling Ben white makes it much more likely he will sign a new deal, surely. It would benefit both parties for him to probably double his wages for a year before a huge move and then we would get a much bigger fee. I am not convinced we would sell for a particularly low figure next summer because if it is that low then we might as well keep him (unless caicedo or someone else suddenly looks incredible).

This season is a HUGE bonus for me, I was sure he would go in the summer. I love the man, he is now my favourite all time Albion player and will be devastated when he goes but he deserves to play at the very highest level. Watching the Champions League games last night, he should be playing at that level. He would still be one of the best midfielders in the competition.
Although Man U, city and Liverpool fans are all screaming they need to buy a player like bissouma. For Man U he is the final piece in the jigsaw.
If a super-club want him - and they absolutely should, then they will pay what they need, to secure his services. that's not to say they wouldn't love to get him for £20m, but if they want him and they need to pay £50m, then they'll pay £50m.
Manchester City paid £63m for Rodri, who was less established, unproven in this country, and inferior in every single attribute..
