So Plymouth can't call us dirty northern bastards any more?

No, this is now deemed to be "regionalist". The FA, the government and Kick it Out will be issuing a statement to this effect shortly. Regionalism will be deemed as a "hate crime" and will now be included in the handbook for stewards so they can take immediate and decisive action against culprits at games.

Speaking as a Shrewsbury fan, it is one of the worst insults that you can direct at a rival club's fans. Deeply hurtful and very ignorant.

Did one of the stands at Gay Meadow not agree with the sentiment though?

It's mainly a crime against humour and rates along side street dancing as one of those things in football that wouldn't be missed if it quietly disappeared.

Where do you draw the line? People calling me "four eyes" all my life. That is deeply hurtful. It's not deeply hurtful if it's quite obviously not true or obviously banter.

Is this a woosh moment (on me), or do you think there's a problem with opposing fans calling you Welsh?

It's not so much the chanting, it's when you get grown men shouting into your face about leeks and zulus and slate mining after the game. Often in front of kids.

If you can't abuse players or fans for their colour, nationality, region or sexuality, surely it's also wrong to shout insults at players who happen, through an accident of birth, to have less talent than others?

Isn't the problem there simply that grown men are shouting into your face after the game. It probably doesn't matter what they're saying, they're annoying twats.

Maybe, given it is one year to the day since Gary Speed took his own life, we could show a bit of class off the field as well as on it and not resort to any Welsh themed chants tonight.

Seriously? ****** is used as a hateful word, and is an extreme insult to a race of people. Calling a group of Welsh fans sheepshaggers is clearly a joke (I'm assuming the Welsh don't tend to have sex with sheep) and not offensive.

Oh please. I can't see the problem with Carlisle fans calling us French, we're clearly not French, it's funny. And people from Brizol are clearly not Welsh, and it wouldn't matter if they were, it's just banter and nobody should be offended. We shouldn't have to stop this banter because somebody that has nothing to do with Brighton or Bristol died a year ago.

Normally not an issue, in fact humorous and part of the banter, but as I say, on some occasions it's a matter of class.

Well, obviously people don't really come up shouting into my face about slate mining, I was merely trying to draw a vaguely amusing analogy with the difference between people singing about Brighton fans being gay and accosting them individually after the game with HIV related insults etc. Obviously I failed.

I have nothing against the Welsh. People can't help being Welsh, they generally have no control over where they were born. I don't believe that anybody chooses, or would choose, to be Welsh voluntarily however.

I don't really think the two things are connected. That said, its a bit of a shit chant anyway so I wouldn't be that bothered either way.
