Silly old bat
No card for Veltman, yellow for Rice.

I also had the benefit of the wisdom of Michael Dawson and Mike Dean who were watching the game live.

Sorry Glen but both irrelevant observations. Too few pundits simply offering the opinion that Rice is to blame for his card. If he stays away he avoids the temptation of the silly little flick of the ball. He also avoids Veltman's original plan of whacking the ball at him to get the second yellow. In that second scenario as other posters have observed the ref would have just told them to get on with and no cards for anyone.

The fact that Veltman kicks Rice's foot is a complete red herring and farcical that Arteta demanded a red.

Bleating about the Pedro incident in first half is a classic case of ' Whataboutery '. Even he had booked him that would have effectively endorsed the later Rice decision. And instead of going bonkers on the bench maybe Arteta should be asking why one of his players with the new multi ball set up didn't try to get the ball moving from near where the ball went out.

Some of the punditry was tinged shocking big club bias. And enough said for Keown who was an utter cock!
On the bench? More like miles outside of his technical area. How does he get away with that every week?

Veltman did exactly what any Arsenal player would have done if it was the other way around- kick the ball against the player preventing the quick free kick to highlight this to the ref, only in this case the ball was kicked away by rice as he did this - and kicked rice instead - that’s rice’s fault not veltmans there’s no intent there - yes you can argue the ref was inconsistent coz he didn’t book Pedro in the first half for that same thing but it doesn’t mean rice wasn’t idiotic to test the ref in that way when he’s already carded Even Ally Mccoist went down the let’s try and blame the bton player route - it’s utter nonsense.

Did Rice delay the play - yes - yellow.

Did Veltman kick Rice because he moved the ball he was about to kick. Yes. No card.

Don’t get caught up in the arsenal sore loser hysteria or the biased big club commentators. Ref got it right.

If it is a yellow for Rice then Veltman can't really be deemed to be at fault.

Soft, but Rice knew he was on a yellow. Veltman knew what he was doing and outsmarted him
It wasn’t soft . Deliberately kicking the ball away is deliberately kicking the ball away . Yellow card.

Let's be honest, Veltman had absolutely no intention of "taking a quick free kick". Can we stop pretending that he was?

He totally engineered that situation and Rice's second yellow was bought and paid for by Veltman.

Which is why I absolutely ADORE him.

Agree but all rice had to do is not kick it away .

Can anyone confirm whether Saka was onside for their goal? Haven't seen a replay which confirms either way but he does look suspiciously off. I saw on X that Naylor said it wasn't checked but I'm assuming it was.

Totally agree, but look where Veltman throws the ball. It's literally right there. Arsenal are coached to make snidey little nudges of the ball to slow down play to within an inch of their lives.

I'm absolutely certain that he threw the ball there knowing full well that Arteta's micro programming would take over

Love Arteta moaning that “Joao Pedro did the same thing (but worse) in the first half”
If you look at that it’s worth noting that it was a ball gone out of play on the touchline and Joao Pedro “passed it back to their goalkeeper”
The same thing? Not remotely as he was giving possession directly back (albeit a long way back) not flicking it sideways into touch away from opposition players

I really don’t understand the comparisons with Pedro. Earlier in the match Arsenal thought Mitoma had dribbled the ball out and stopped playing. He had not. It is not down to the players to stop. Had he seen the lino flag or ref signal? If they had not then Pedro can pretend he didn’t think the ball was out. Obviously a lie but it is not the same as restarting a game after a whistle due to a foul. Do Arsenal want players booked who get to the byline and then hit a cross when the ball had just gone out of play? It is down to the ref and lino to signal.

Staggered people compare the throw in incident when the ball was not going to an arsenal player anyway and we were in position etc. rice was out of position so kicked the ball out.

Haven’t read the whole thread but Rice knew what he was doing and stepped across to block a quick free kick, ref was right to give him a second yellow. The guy is an over rated waste of space imo anyway

I was thinking exactly this. Pedro could at least argue that he didn't know it was out. I mean, we're all pretty sure he knew that it was, but still. Can't prove it either way.
