If it's ever possible for downright bad luck to ever befall this snidey two faced piece of shit then I will open several bottles of France's finest to toast a great day in modern history, sadly he wasn't called Teflon for nothing! As the Thatcher obsessives on here say, "I will dance on his grave"

H

Hes hardly the first politician to take anyone in to an unwarranted war (the Falklands for example) and every one of the leaders of all the other main parties would have done the same, regardless of what they say now.

Regardless of your view on Thatcher I don't think you can class the Falklands war as unwarranted nor even in the same class as the invasion of Iraq. Indeed, it could have been prevented but the Argies invaded British protected islands - what should we have done ? Sent a postcard asking them to leave please ?

I think you've answered your own question there.

I'm suggesting it was preventable not unwarranted. WWII could probably have been preventable but I don't think anyone would argue it was unwarranted

The Falklands War was a failure of a different kind. The Foreign Office and MI6 have to take the rap, they missed all the signals of what was going to happen, and didn't do what their job basically is. Once they invaded, we had to respond.

I'm not sure how WWII could have been preventable - unless you mean the terms imposed by the Treaty of Versailles could have been less onerous but how far back do you want to go?
I agree that given the islands were invaded, she had little choice but her government was, to say the least, ambiguous about the importance of the islands before the invasion.

What utter tripe. The war was preventable because the government of the day were making noises about negotiating a handover. HMS Endurance patrolled the area and there were plenty of warnings that the Government chose to ignore. They misread the situation and didn't act quick enough to prevent the invasion.

Always good to read posts before you respond. Do you know what the Foreign Office does?

Not sure what you're driving at. Are you talking about the Foreign office as part of a civil service and separate from the Government or that they are a tool of Government.

How we got from Tony Blair to WWII is interesting... irritatingly, WWII is on of the few things I can't blame on Thatcher.

Anyway, I've been leafing through my copy of A Journey today and must say it's a very interesting read and well recommended, lots of lovely pictures for the stupid Tories to look at too, nice touch.

He will never be able to escape his legacy of taking us into an unnecessary war. He asked his soldiers to give their lives and limbs for a fight that was not required. Unforgivable.

Regardless of what else he did.

No offense but isn't that what soldiers do? Put life and limb on the line when the Government asks them to?

Or am I wrong?

Maybe they should have become plumbers if they don't like being shot at.

No offence taken.

You are correct - and that is why the Goverrnment needs to exercise maximum care in making that request.

In this case - there was no link between 9/11 and Iraq - just an imagined one in the minds of the cabal surrounding Bush. And for that lads of your age lost their lives and limbs.
