Mine was the Maharaja in Upper Beeding, sometime in '83 or '84. No idea what I had, but will always remember another bloke in there asking for an "Extra Hot Duck Vindaloo"

When I saw the heading I wondered if this was some bizarre sexual euphemism :)

However, I believe the answer is probably in region of 15.

Mine was from the GULLISTAN in Preston Road when Ali was the owner circa 1973. This was the era when his 14 year old son used to be a waiter in the evenings dressed in a dinner suit. From memory it was a Madras with about half an inch of oil floating on the top, when the container lid was removed. Used to go there regularly after that, Ali did the best chicken dhansak I have ever tasted.

I think I was a fairly late starter when it comes to Indian food. I was probably about 16 when I had my first one. To be honest I don't really order them these days either. I much prefer a good Chinese takeaway - In fact I think I'm gonna have one tonight after all this TAKEAWAY talk!

Something like this should suffice...

The Golden Bengal RIP Old Steine - late 70's

I had a chicken madras to show off to me mates ( because I could take it - I even liked Worstershire Sauce and that was hot)

Alright at first but after about 10 mins I thought I was dying.

Yes Cokki 7, I am indeed very bored, however, if you had an Indian at 10 you must have been pretty spoilt, because back in 'those' days a takeaway was a luxury my family could not afford!

btw, what have I told you about BLASPHEMING !

The Anglo Indian on the Pantiles in Tunbridge Wells in 1974, I was 12.

And I lived in and played for Rusthall for about 9 years in the 70s.

The Anglo is still there but under a different name now...the old Anglo got shut down 5/6 years ago for failing a health inspection. It had no running water and was infested with cockroaches. Shame really because they did a good curry!

Did you live in Rusthall ?

well i had my first indian when i was about 15 , but personally think its about the ONLY good thing that has come from the mass immigration of people from the indian sub continent, i mean most of em are bangladeshis anyway, and they are always whining that they need to import more labour from home to be chefs blah blah , why cant white english people be trained by them , can you imagine the outcry if we started turning them down for chefs jobs in english restaurants ??:rant:

The Bombay in Station Road, Bognor Regis in 1978. This is also the one and only place from which I have done a runner.

These were the days when you had to pay extra for breast meat.

It is still there

What the 'Breast Meat' or the curry house...

For me:

It was the place on the level 'Tropical Curryland.

Owner was called Oosad Ahotkarri.
