Rioja and as it's my birthday today I've just had a bottle at lunchtime.

(I'm at work and er... struggling...)

White; A balanced Riesling from the Rudesheim area, from a good year (otherwise a spatlasen would be preferrable).

Red; Merlot, a soft one with low acidity. Sometimes people rave about a wine that's 'hot' with acidity, thinking it's stronger in alcohol.

Port wine is often nice, especially after dinner.

Blush; California white Zinfandel - a fruity one, for a dessert drink on a hot summer evening. (otherwise, as a regular plonk - it's for the gayers)

How much virtual money have we got?

Red: I'd go for a nice Gevrey-Chambertin or a Brunello di Montalcino if I could, but I can't afford those in the real world. Probably Chateauneuf-du-Pape for a posh drink i can afford, and Rioja as something to quaff in quantity.
As TLO has already suggested, this is the correct answer.

Absolute top choice would be a Brunello di Montalcino Riserva (1955 vintage) from the Biondi Santi estate. Recently touted on eBay for only €3,200 a bottle, which is ridiculous since the last nine bottles available at Fine & Rare Wines Ltd are going for only £671 a bottle. I think the Co-op has run out of stocks.

When I was in Montalcino last month, I was very satisfied by the bog standard Rosso di Montalcino that flowed everywhere.

Whatever we bring back from France from the local Super U.

Seriously,

Red - Cotes de Rhone Villages
White - Gewurztraminer or a German Riesling or Turning Leaf
Rose - Earnest & Julio Grenache

White - Puligny Montrachet or Sancerre - very cold

Red - not too fussed by red. Rioja suits me fine but I'll drink Chateau bottled Margaux Grand Cru if money is no object

No idea on English wines, those I have tried have been appalling although I believe there are some fine ones?

I used to make Boots wine kits when I was poor. I vaguely recall they seemed to taste almost reasonable at the time but I was alot younger and stupider then, would drink almost anything that was cheap, and couldn't afford anything that was any good. Also they gave me a vile headache the next day.

I know better now...

Some of those wine kits left a lot to be desired

The only way to make your own wine is to start with fresh fruit or veg and procede with a very long fermentation. :drunk:
