Colonel Tim Collins before the illegal and immoral invasion of Iraq. As a serving officer he was obliged to take part in it, but he made it perfectly clear to his men that he expected them to maintain the moral high ground and treat the Iraqi people with the utmost respect.

Best speech I ever heard.

We go to liberate, not to conquer.
We will not fly our flags in their country
We are entering Iraq to free a people and the only flag which will be flown in that ancient land is their own.
Show respect for them.

There are some who are alive at this moment who will not be alive shortly.
Those who do not wish to go on that journey, we will not send.
As for the others, I expect you to rock their world.
Wipe them out if that is what they choose.
But if you are ferocious in battle remember to be magnanimous in victory.

Iraq is steeped in history.
It is the site of the Garden of Eden, of the Great Flood and the birthplace of Abraham.
Tread lightly there.

You will see things that no man could pay to see
-- and you will have to go a long way to find a more decent, generous and upright people than the Iraqis.
You will be embarrassed by their hospitality even though they have nothing.

Don't treat them as refugees for they are in their own country.
Their children will be poor, in years to come they will know that the light of liberation in their lives was brought by you.

If there are casualties of war then remember that when they woke up and got dressed in the morning they did not plan to die this day.
Allow them dignity in death.
Bury them properly and mark their graves.

It is my foremost intention to bring every single one of you out alive.
But there may be people among us who will not see the end of this campaign.
We will put them in their sleeping bags and send them back.
There will be no time for sorrow.

The enemy should be in no doubt that we are his nemesis and that we are bringing about his rightful destruction.
There are many regional commanders who have stains on their souls and they are stoking the fires of hell for Saddam.
He and his forces will be destroyed by this coalition for what they have done.
As they die they will know their deeds have brought them to this place. Show them no pity.

It is a big step to take another human life.
It is not to be done lightly.
I know of men who have taken life needlessly in other conflicts.
I can assure you they live with the mark of Cain upon them.

If someone surrenders to you then remember they have that right in international law and ensure that one day they go home to their family.
The ones who wish to fight, well, we aim to please.

If you harm the regiment or its history by over-enthusiasm in killing or in cowardice, know it is your family who will suffer.
You will be shunned unless your conduct is of the highest -- for your deeds will follow you down through history.
We will bring shame on neither our uniform or our nation.

It is not a question of if, it's a question of when.
We know he has already devolved the decision to lower commanders, and that means he has already taken the decision himself.
If we survive the first strike we will survive the attack.

As for ourselves, let's bring everyone home and leave Iraq a better place for us having been there.

Our business now is North.

Uncle Spielberg signing off

After 6 years posting usually complete and utter drivel I have decided to stop posting on NSC. I did not know whether to do a final thread but I thought I would as NSC plumbed the depth's yesterday.

The general dis repect and bullying on NSC has become very bad recently. I am big enough and ugly enough to take it but it seems a general trend now. I know a lot of very good people who used to post on NSC but have been " hounded " out and feel they cannot post anymore. Its a great shame.

I know I have been controversial, moody, wildly up and down and abrasive sometimes but I hope i have not posted general insults in threads to specific people. I have been critical of the football , films, music, whatever but not directly insulting people. It seems now there is far too much general insulting of posters for no good reason. Frankly life is too short. I am not the only one who thinks this. Some major posters are thinking of finishing. I can accept people have different tastes but the constant flow of abuse about people, films, RACE HORSES and everything else I hold dear means this site and the posting is no longer pleasurable.

The final straw was the Desert Orchid thread yesterday. The comments on that were frankly a total disgrace. And I notice a comic genious has posted a new thread " Is Desert Orchid dead ". How fecking hilarious. NOT.

It was " only a horse " but a special one and again fond memories I had were denegrated and ruined by very childish people with too much time on their hands. This thread was a microcosim of how NSC has become.

I have met some great people through NSC over the years specially with the REMF which showed the greats NSC can achieve and loved the ramblings of Easy 10, the intelligence and abrasive posts of LI, the blistering honesty of some people on here like On the left wing and El Pres, the brilliant mind of Lord B and the cut of thrust of posts with Chapman and other adversaries but it has gone beyond friendly banter and is just abusive on most occasions now.

Hopefully this will not be regarded as an attention seeking thread but as an observation of a great site which in my opinion is going off the rails.

Up the Albion forever.

"People see me, and they see the suit, and they go: "you're not fooling anyone", they know I'm rock and roll through and through. But you know that old thing, live fast, die young? Not my way. Live fast, sure, live too bloody fast sometimes, but die young? Die old. That's the way- not orthodox, I don't live by "the rules" you know. And if there's one other person who's influenced me in that way I think, someone who is a maverick, someone who does that to the system, then, it's Ian Botham. Because Beefy will happily say "that's what I think of your selection policy, yes I've hit the odd copper, yes I've enjoyed the old dooby, but will you piss off and leave me alone, I'm walking to John O'Groats for some spastics."
