Seriously, NY is great but I hate flying there - Newark or JFK.....unless someone is meeting me with a car and I can nod off, then I'm in..

Berlin for me - never ceases to fascinate

Runner-up is Budapest. First visited it when it was in the Eastern bloc and have been back many times since

Favourite in the UK is Bristol. Reminds me a bit of Brighton - once even thought of living there

Lovely small city. Visited on honeymoon on a day trip from Florence year, came back following year to stay a few days just before the Palio.

Favourite other cities are York and Edinburgh

Aahh The Palio, havent been to one since 2008, but between 1990 and 2008 I probably photographed 12-15 Palios with the help of the City Hall who always gave me a (lasciapassare) photographers pass. The late Lord Bracknell, having lived nearby for a while was something of an expert on all the dark arts of the Contradas.

Not particularly well travelled but liked Seville (outside of summer) nice mixture of historic parts but with nice modern bits without being overwhelming or touristy.

First choice Barcelona because of the buildings designed or inspired by Gaudi plus its Jazz Scene with its concentration on youth and younger children.
Its probably unfashionable but I much enjoyed six weeks in Los Angeles and the immediate surrounding area.

I lived in Vienna for 6 months and genuinely fell in love with the place. History, culture, good food, easy to get around, easy to travel to other countries/cities loved it.

Berlin, Hanoi, Ulaanbaatar was great fun and the loveliest of people. Tallinn and Ljubljana were great small cities to get away for the weekend.

Bucharest surprised me a lot. Yeah they have a fair amount of wider social problems, but from a tourist perspective it was thoroughly absorbing as a city. Little Paris was an apt description.

Moscow was a awful place, never go back.

Oh…and I visit Barcelona every year at least once so I should include this city I guess.

I see so much love for Barcelona but it's my least favourite city in Spain so far. Better food, architecture, value for money, historical sites and weather in Granada (my favourite), Malaga, Seville, Cadiz, Cordoba, Palma, Valencia and Madrid to name a few. Is it that I missed something in Barcelona or has no-one else been to these other places?

Christ Leeds has far more to offer than Barcelona IMHO.

Very nearly bought a 4 bed townhouse overlooking the river Arun in the late 80’s for £56k. Didn’t do it and every time I go there now, I see it and think that I wish I did.

It’s a good question. Of your list I’ve only been to Valencia so ignorance plays a part I guess .

Barca: it’s a city I know very well and this is part of the attraction. I primarily go there to switch off and have a rest and get some sunshine especially during the grey bleak sub-zero Berlin winter. Always the same hotel and as I know the city so well and have done all the tourist stuff I don’t feel compelled to rush around looking at things. I usually get up, short stroll to the market and have a long slow breakfast, people watch and then think about what I’m going to do with myself. Maybe go for a run along the marina and beach, then worry about dinner. I often go to the parks as well. I have a raft of restaurants I always go to and a few bars. Maybe I could get all this, and maybe more elsewhere, but it fits a specific need which is centred around familiarity, rest and switching off and I’d need to work at familiarity if I went elsewhere….which is exactly what I don’t want to do. Hopefully this makes sense.

I do try and visit new places, Zadar and Kopenhagen this year for example, but I need a few well known staples as well. I would like to visit more of Spain though.

If you fancy booking a nice restaurant, outside table, overlooking the beach, next January I I’ll give Leeds a go; I promise. First round on me.

Toronto is a really good shout. I worked there for a couple of weeks and loved it. I tailored my hours so I was only working in the mornings and went and explored the city all afternoon and evenings, so much to do and many interesting neighborhoods
