Presuming you're not taking the Mick, I totally agree. It's also very funny in parts. I love the "I've got Beethoven and a few of the lads in the front room..... " bits.

Kes, Brighton Rock original version, The Thirty-Nine Steps, Billy Liar, The Third Man and early David Lean: Great Expectations and Brief Encounter.

If the Third Man is British, it is certainly up there. One of my favourite ever films. Theme Music, Camera Angles, Sewers, Cinematography to die for and Orson Welles at his best. What more could you want?

Naked - Ken Loach is my fave

I think Mike Leigh directed that one: it is a very dark but excellent film. Talking of Loach: my favourite from him is Land and Freedom, a superb film about the Spanish civil war. Mind you, maybe it's only old lefties that will enjoy this. Back to Leigh: Maybe not my favourite British films, but I think his longer pics about Victorians - Topsy-Turvy and Mr Turner - are very good.

Very dark and depressing but realistic in what life is like around say, somewhere like Selhurst.

The two main coppers were quite poorly acted though but it's Michael Caine at his best and he makes the film IMO.
