I’m not trying to hijack the thread, but, does the panel think that actors playing real characters have an easier job than actors playing fictional characters?
There seems to me, to be better performances from actors playing real people, the two I mentioned earlier, Helen Mirren as the Queen, etc, than fictional characters.

Robert Mitchum in "The Night Of The Hunter". The epitome of menace. The only time I've taken him seriously as an actor.

Hanks really is the best actor ever. Big, Philadelphia, Apollo 13, Captain Phillips probably more I can't remember

Agreed. I'd also include his role in One Hour Photo and, if it counts, Aladdin.
I would also add to my list above Tom Hanks in Captain Phillips - the last 10 minutes are astonishing

Agreed, Insomnia too, the early Nolan film. He had an incredible vulnerability in those films (which so sadly makes sense now).

I was in ID. I wasn't very good, but I've never been in anything else, so would have to be that.

Not necessarily the best but performances that I've enjoyed and stuck in my memory include:
Burt Lancaster : Atlantic City
Burt Lancaster : The Swimmer
Harry Dean Stanton : Paris Texas
Al Pacino : Dog Day Afternoon
Jean Reno : Leon
Meryl Streep : Sophie's Choice
Kevin Kline : Sophie's Choice
Klaus Kinski : Fitzcarraldo
Robert Mitchum : The Night of the Hunter
Ruth Gordon : Harold and Maude
Jerry Lewis : The King of Comedy
Robert DeNiro : The King of Comedy
Peter Finch : Network
Malcolm McDowell : If
Brigitte Bardot : La Verite
Henry Fonda : Twelve Angry Men
Bette Davies: Whatever Happened to Baby Jane

Lots of others but that's enough to be going on with.
