I've not read through everything on this thread but Dustin Hoffmans role in rain man is something special

Always liked Lawrence Olivier's comment to Hoffman who had been irritating him on set for the filming of Marathon Man, where Hoffman would not sleep for 24 hours to look properly stressed, and go on huge runs to get into character, to which Olivier said 'my dear boy, why don't you just try acting?'.

Leonardo Di Caprio - Wolf Of Wall Street

I'm yet to see a Leonardo Di Caprio performance that wasn't good. He is a very capable actor who tries all sorts or roles and tends to nail his part superbly. Saying that even in the Revenant which I didn't think much of as a movie he was pretty good, I did believe that a bear trying to maul at you would look very similar to that scene.

Bruno Ganz in Downfall was as chilling a portrayal of an historical figure as you could ever wish to see.

Saying that Meryl Streep in Sophie's Choice was also as moving as I can remember seeing.
