Wherever The Mood Takes Me
That was my first FA Cup game, and my first ever trip to the Goldstone.

My Grandad, being a big Geordie fan, wanted to take me to see Brighton play a proper team playing proper football.

Keegan and Terry McDermott were in Newcastle's team I think?

Those are the only 2 Newcastle players that I remember that day, both due to the dodgy perms!!

Not a bad season to attend your 1st FA Cup game!

1976 - Saw the home game and the 1st replay against the croydon scum. Think Mullery remembers it well. Ron Challis the eternal enemy.

Newport County v Southampton in the 3rd round, January 1957. A 3-3 draw at Somerton Park, with County going on to win the replay at the Dell 1-0.

This was followed by a home tie against Arsenal, which County lost 2-0 - with the consolation prize for us lads being that Mervyn Griffiths, the well-known referee (and World Cup final linesman) - a teacher at the school down the road from where I lived - managed to get hold of the matchball and gave it to my mate, Jeff Thomas, who was a pupil in his class.

We played with that ball for years. Jeff went on to play football for Newport County and Wales (at Under 23 level).

Nice one FG. My first memory of seeing the Albion in the FAC was vs Wisbech at the Goldstone in 1965 when we won 10-1; also saw us turn Saarfend over 9-0 in the league later the same season. Probably the most notable FAC game I remember in the 60's was when we drew Chelsea in 1967; Bobby Tambling gave them a first half lead but Dave Turner equalised past Peter Bonnetti in front of the South stand during the second half. Brian Tawse, and the rest of us, thought he'd scored the winner late on with a long distance effort but it was controversially disallowed for offside.

Begged my father to take me to Wisbech game...he said it wouldn't be worth watching!...said we would go to Southend league game ( ' more competitive ! ' )
Remember it being 9-1 ( equalling our league record )..theirs was best goal of game..25 yarder into top corner. Sat in West Stand chanting " we want 10 "
Didn't they sell tickets for Chelsea game at Reserve match...drew crowd of over 20,000...played football in morning, for school and then dashed across to Goldstone. Couldn't believe queues.....all round ground and down the Shoreham road.

Not sure it was my first Fa Cup match, but it certainly the first one I remember against Southampton at home ( 1985) possibility 5th round. Tv cameras on the East Stand with the legendary chant "can you see us on the box"! We lost 2-0. But next seasons opening credits of Match of the Day featured a shot of my Dad at the game, looking pissed off as his sons had dragged him down the Football again!

My first FA cup game (& possibly only one) was the one played at Stamford Bridge, so being a neutral venue it would have been the 2nd replay, I can't remember if I attended the previous games at the Goldstone, or Selhurst Park.

Still can't forget the thrice (I think) taken penalty being saved, after one had legitimately been scored by Horton.

It was quite obvious that Challis did not want to see Brighton win the game.

first one i remember walton and hersham away:facepalm: went on a special direct train, kicked off a bit on the way to the ground??? Standing on a tea bar when walton scored, the goal was dissallowed but we got thrown off the tea bar roof and missed the refs decision:ohmy: got all the way back to haywards heath and only talking to other fans in the burrell realised we had drawn 0-0:clap2: replay, played in the afternoon bunked off school and saw albion get beat 0-4:eek: Well a least we could look forward to the league, big game bristol rovers at home next:eek:

I was there and it was a bit lively around the ground. Seem to remember they scored in 1st 10 seconds and it was disallowed.
Couldn't get to replay as I was working. Bought Argus on way home and saw Albion were a goal behind. Lord Vinnicombe's report finished on about 75mins so anxiously scanned ' stop press ' column...looked in disbelief at news that they had scored 3 more in last 10 minutes. Walked home in shock.
A message to all fans who think the world has caved in losing at Hartlepool..you should have been around to live through.....
1) BHA 0 WALTON+HERSHAM 4
2) BHA 2 BRISTOL R 8
3) TRANMERE 4 BHA 1 ( and we got away with 4 ! )
and all in just over a week.

hmmm, I THINK it was the FA Cup Semi Final. Not a bad start. Didn't make the final or replay though as my dad's back had gone. Sad times.
