Cant understand why we don`t buy American ships , the Aussies bought and built Oliver Hazard Perry class frigates , and several other nations have taken ships of the yanks in the past .

The days where we can build 26 Leander class frigates in 14 years alongside other naval vessels needed such as subs and carriers are unfortunately long gone . I know there are a few RN on here , and hope what i suggest doesn`t offend but buying Arliegh Burke destroyers that take 4 years each ,and are built in several yards (9 in 5 years is their aim) whereas Glasgow has taken 7 years so far and is nearly 50% smaller even if she is a frigate and not a destroyer that is a massive saving of time .

I would also buy our carriers from them too , it`s amazing that we invented the angled flight deck and the steam catapult yet our 2 new creations have neither , plus we have hamstrung ourselves with only VTOL F35Bs , so can`t fully operate alongside our allies who mainly have chosen the A variant . And after all when was the last time the Americans had their equivalent to our 23s-45s-and fleet carriers spend more time being re-designed refitted and mended than they do at sea ?.

Both my wife`s family and mine are Royal Navy so i am not having a pop , but we are falling behind quickly and losing the respect it took hundreds of years to build . OMO

Because the money can be better spent on the surface fleet that is in use at the moment than keeping two ships mothballed. Added to that both ships are over 20 years old and require a refit which was canceled. Then who is going to crew it and the question of how long it would take to run the ships up for active service. Once a ship is mothballed it’s very rare that they come out.

This isn’t about defence it’s about labour as your comments on pensioners, farmers etc. show exactly what you are about.

if you really want an axe to grind then pick on the previous government who put the two carriers in mothballs. get hold of George Osbourne and give him a good kicking because he ripped the heart out of the armed forces with his austerity cuts.
I’d have an axe to grind with any government whatever flavour if they make questionable decisions, and this decision in both timing, value of saving and the underlying perception it creates is questionable.

No one would have been happier than me if this new Government had created the chalk and cheese difference that long suffering electorate so desperately wants have binned off the last lot.

Starmer said outside No 10 that he wanted his administration to “tread lightly on people’s lives”. Notwithstanding, the revelations about Lord Alli, his administration are simply carrying on from the last.

I would wager that the vast majority of people support Ukraine in their struggle with Russia, but equally that support has a threshold, especially in taxpayers money and even more so when Ukraine get billions whilst pensioners are not getting winter fuel allowance. It’s idiotic politics.

It is worse then that though because the electorate can’t fathom the logic of continuing to lavish billions of taxpayers money on illegal migrants in hotels, with all the problems that causes and yet we are committed to higher taxes and less public service.

This is how the political backdrop of the confrontation with farmers and cutting defence capability will play out. It’s why the last lot got binned out, and why the fate of this lot is sealed if they ignore it.

No idea.

But in the UK, why would anyone offer their life to defend a country that does not care about them?

That does not value them. That puts others ahead of them?
Because unless you have a legal/illegal immigration/refugee plan to enter some other country, then defending this most imperfect country is a billion times better than living in slave conditions under a conquering invader. ???

No nation is going to invade.

You will be expected to sacrifice your life on a distant battlefield.
