Had the phone call earlier this week and yesterday collected a rather stunning Datejust 41mm Bright Blue. Mappin & Webb tried to sell me their accidental insurance payable in a lump sum, £1100 for 3 years or £1500 for 5 years.

Does anyone have any insurance recommendations? I’m sure their insurance product is very good, but I hadn’t really budgeted for the additional lump sum.

I recently left the crown open on my Oris Hammerhead by mistake on a rainy day and some water got in.

I thought it was done for but 24 hours in a bowl of rice (with crown still open) worked View attachment 185423View attachment 185424
Sorry just seen this. Glad you got it sorted, but the seals should have protected it even with the crown out on this type of divers watch. It sounds like the seals are perished and probably worth servicing your watch. Alternatively water may have also got in by damage of the glass.

Check with your home insurer first, it may already be covered depending on value but you may need to register as a separate item. Also ask if it’s covered if lost/stolen outside the home, some insurers depending on value also stipulate a fixed safe.

as 10cc say, not in hove
watches are definitely going to disappear. I have a fabulous Breitling watch i bought 25 years ago, but it's the one thing my teen boys don't want to "borrow" . File with cameras I'm afraid

Bit of a delayed response, but my recommendation is to not insure it. £1100 a to pay out on what I’m a assuming is a 9-10K watch is like saying that there’s a 9-1 chance that you’ll lose your watch in 3 years.

Best option for something like this is to look after it, which I’m sure you would anyway, and put aside the money you saved on insurance. How many watches have you lost in your adult life?

Sounds a bit reckless, I know, but think logically. All the money I’ve save on not itemising expensive stuff on my household insurance over a few years would pay for the replacement now.

I'm not sure I agree - pretty much everyone I know and work with, of various ages and generations, wears one so I don't see them disappearing any time soon.

I used to have a 'collection' of watches and a 'watch box' to put them in.

Finances (well.. a failed business if I'm honest, which almost broke me emotionally) decided I could no longer have this luxury, and now I have the one watch I refused to sell (Rolex Daytona) as this was one of my life goals, as well as my 'Daily Wearer' (Hamilton Pan Europ) which I absolutely love.

Here they are - my final two. I have no plans to sell either of them. One is for special occasions, one is for everyday.

My next purchase, when my Crypto comes in, will be a Panerai. I love a Panerai.

It wasn't even 9-10k, it was £7,100 and I'd never really considered like that. Applying your logic its roughly 6.5/1 chance in the first 3 years and 4.75/1 in the first 5 years. I never took insurance out and looking at those numbers I'm very glad I didn't!

I have a few watches. Much (much) more cost effective to add them as specific items of value on your house insurance. Can cover either under home or when out and about separately 👍

I stopped using Omega for one of my watches a few years back. Service quality was variable and becoming stupidly expensive. Have used this company in the past as an authorised Omega service partner, who are less expensive:

Although more recently their prices have also increased and I've used Wheelers in Worthing who are local, turn around is quicker, prices much lower and the service to date has been great.

This. That quote is more than the group policy for my fleet of Italian shopping bikes and race car. My arm clocks are covered under house insurance . . Getting a detailed quote from a reputable provider there is my advice. ALso covers bikes, jewellery and guitars/amps

Like Skirliewirlie, as recommended here, I used Wheelers for servicing . . . very good.
