[Misc] Would you time travel to the past or to the future?

Dunno, must have been quite something to watch it flying along on the main line from Dieppe to get there! Did consider a trip back to the 1950s and finding a shed somewhere where I could spirit away a D1 tank for preservation purposes.

D1, nice Loco. When I go back in the past I will predict the quintuple lottery jackpot numbers and come back to fund lots of replicas of which a D1 would be one - nice size, Bluebell would look after it :) Have some train porn on me :)

Perhap we should start an anorak sub forum.

Sorry to be a killyoy but you can't go to the future because it doesn't exist yet.

Actually time travel to the future is within the realms of physics, and indeed has been proven (and is being done as we speak with GPS satellites having to offset daily). If you travel into space and return you are technically travelling in time due to velocity time dilation. One day we could harness objects in the solar system or go close to speed of light to really play with time.

Layman’s: The faster we move in space, the slower our relative time is.

It’s travelling back in time that’s the problem.

Back to the 80's. This time I'll wear slightly less tight Jumbo cords or Farahs and try a bit harder and drink a bit less (Possibly)

When Sid and all the other sales of the family silver come around I'll lump on rather than sneer and I'll avoid the ex missus like the plague (Sorry kids) that way I'll still have a nice house rather than a pokey flat. Not that I am bitter....

Otherwise, I may go back to the swinging 60's taking extra care to avoid my mother :lolol: maybe I'll start a Kaftan shop or somethink

The past, to see some of my favourite bands in their prime at various times. The Rolling Stones in the mid to late 1960s, Cream, the Allman Brothers' Band, Genesis (with Gabriel) among others.

But also to catch up with some jazz - Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Weather Report among others.

And to see some of my dad's favourite dance orchestras. He was in to dance music in the 1930s in South London, his favourite being Harry Roy, but that and listening to things like the Carnegie Hall jazz Concert from 1938 with an augmented Benny Goodman orchestra including people like Gene Krupa, Count Basie and Lionel Hampton would be a real treat. The energy there was tremendous.

Can you nip over then and find out what year we are winning the Champions League so I can try and stay alive to see it? Ta.

If like Dr Who, you had immunity from disease and could understand all languages then I'd go back in time for sure. To witness some of the biggest events in the world's history would be amazing.

I'd probably start with a simple trip back to 1966 for the World Cup, just to get my time travelling warmed up and then I'd go back to see Jesus.

I always laugh at these sorts of things. I love science fantasy, including Dr Who and Star Trek (which, in series 1-3, used the idiom to create little morality plays).

But we can't travel in time and never will. If we could, the 'visitors' would already be here.

Therefore to 'wish' to be able to do something impossible is whimsy. I sometimes spend half a second thinking what it would be like to soar in the air like a bird. Nice. But as you hint, there is a maudlin aspect to pondering time travel for any . . . . length of time. So I'm out.

You're over thinking it. Nip over to ancient Rome for an orgy home in time for tea. Jobs a good un :lolol:

Swinging London in the sixties, I was just a little bit too young to fully live it at the time.

I’d have to go back as a 20 year old, I’d look like an old fogie weirdo trying too hard at my current age. I’d also have no chance of giving Jean Shrimpton, Julie Christie and Marianne Faithful a pull.

Thermopylae.

I'd have a few days chilling in Thebes first. Take in a play, indulge in some Ancient Greek recreations. Then a few days travelling North with the Spartans. Once at the pass, I'd hide behind a rock on the hillside and watch the carnage unfold. I'd try and meet Xerxes for a chat after the battle (I think he'd like the idea of meeting someone from the future). Then back to 2021 for tea, toast and 24 Hours in Police Custody.

Brighton factually.....
and then I'd go back to see Jesus.

Please remember not to look out for a 5'10" blonde blue eyed fella, you could be there a while looking for him.

Jebus was a hunch backed olive skinned looking cripple by all accounts.
Also I heard he went on a bit and was actually quite boring.

I’d go back and find my dad BEFORE he died.

Yeah, forget all the other stuff, it's got to be the chance for a few conversations with departed family. My great grandfather was born in 1865, and lived just long enough to hold me when I was born, but I'd love to meet him in his prime, about 1900. All my other family lines from other generations too.
