Sorry how I came across if it appears I was in any way making a point. My sole intention by posting what I did was for informative reasons alone. As stated my wife and I were waiting for invitation for booster vaccination and all the news outlets seemed to surmise that booster uptake was not being taken up. This from my experience was lack of invitation, not recipients unwilling to uptake the vaccine. We therefore took advice from social media and attended our vaccine centre which we had attended for our second vaccine during April. The majority of attendees I overheard were like us, seeking booster jabs after the six month period had elapsed and I must add, the staff we spoke to were happy that people were going for their jabs even though not formally invited.

I think once you get past that 6 month elapse period from your second vaccination and are over 50 or vulnerable you are then entitled to a booster, and can book online, or as in your experience walk in. There is no need for an invite, per se.

Jabs in arms ASAP, should be no need to wait for an invite letter and we need to take over large venues again so we can do this at speed, alongside the vaccination programme for teenagers. Then we need to bring back mask wearing and make this a permanent feature inside public indoor spaces and transport. We should at this stage be encouraging social distancing and meeting outdoors and if people continue to be selfish and ignore the advice we will have to legislate for that again as well. I think you might have been indoors too long, crodo. Take a look at the calendar. It's back end of October. Meeting outdoors is no longer a possibility.

The original idea of this lot was that if we have a few weeks of misery, things will get better and we can enjoy the rest of our lives. Then it became months, then years. Now you are saying that we must live in misery for the rest of our lives - but for what? If it's miserable, with no prospect of improvement, then what is the point?

My mother was 86 when this lot started. She is 88 now. If she goes out and about, she might die - we both accept that. But if she stops at home and meets no-one and can talk to no-one, can you guarantee her immortality? No you can't. All you can offer her is a more miserable death, but with a slight chance that it may be delayed.

As if by magic, my invitation from the Racecourse arrived at 15.41 this afternoon so I’ve booked in for next Thursday. I didn’t ring 119 after all.

All that needs doing is to bring mask wearing back in schools as that is by far and large the biggest driver for cases right now, and emphasise the need to wear one in crowded location (like the shops & public transport when they are busy and social distancing is not possible) and things will be fine again.

Presumably testing rates vary between countries? I can only guess.

As for the thread title, I'm going to have to buck the consensus view I'm afraid. A pox on masks. Stuffy, horrible things that wreak havoc on my poor blotchy skin after a couple of hours' use. More than that, is the reliance I (and all of us to an extent) have on facial cues, reading people's expressions. Hearing people, making yourself heard easily. You know, general day-to-day conversations and interactions. All made interminably difficult wearing a muffler over half you face. That I feel, is the "freedom" that many people long for when things get back to normal and we can ditch them for good, hopefully.

Hear me out though: I'm not intentionally being a cretin here. I wash my hands more regularly these days (and more thouroughly), I have greater respect for giving people space in queues. And I'm double-jabbed, looking to have my booster soon. But masks are just...how can I put this eloquently...g'arghhh.

Ah that's it! A country with the highest pro rata fatalities in Europe, had the most ineffective track and trace system, and most infective PPE procurement somehow has managed to accurately assess a true figure of case numbers!!!... Damn those cheating Europeans! no wonder they all have to wear masks.. They are riddled with Covid and they don't know it!


Edit: just looked at your figures and France does 50% of the tests we do yet gets only 8% of the case we get.. I'm sure they must be lying.

Highest in Europe? Have you confused the UK with Bulgaria?

It’s pretty simple no? If you are not testing you don’t find cases, but I’m sure you know that.

I too remember the posts when your son was ill, pleased to hear he is doing well.

I cannot imagine the pain you must all be going through now and I truly hope little Charlie gets better soon. This is such a horrible virus

Well you are across the pond so l'll go easy on you! but l'll go as far as to say, that in this country at least, not wearing a mask in an enclosed space, is selfish in my opinion.

Here it has always come down to the local government authority. I carry my mask with me wherever I go depending on which municipality I happen to be in that day. Sometimes I'm required to wear it and sometimes I'm not required to wear the mask.

several hypothesis. masks and social distancing could account for some, also testing and recording are factors, early effects of waning vaccine another. heres a thing, the number of covid deaths reported are not 10-20%, but nearer 50%. are they 2-5x more likely to die from Covid in those countries? greater minds that ours are looking at this very question, the data however is not great quality.
