I think too many people are looking back at these times with affection.

Yes, quite so, you wonder just how many people who witnessed these events were actually there. Personally I would say that the Spurs game was the worst. What infuriated me is that although the Brighton fans did not cause the trouble the club still ended up being forced to have fences. I remember also that when they went up thinking that the were dangerous. Tragically a few years later the events at Hillsborough proved me right even though the cause was a bit different. The fences were supposed to stop crowd invasions but against Tottenham the first 'invasion' was in fact people trying to escape.

Even more infuriating was that Tottenham escaped any punishment.

I remember a Tottenham lad pulling a knife on a Brighton fan in the West terrace at the Goldstone in 1981 or 1982. I seem to recall being quite excited by the whole thing being a mere nine or ten years old at the time. Not sure whether that was the 3-1 game in question. Would absolutely shit myself now if that happened.

.

The 3-1 game was 15 April 1978 - my 15th birthday and a most exciting day for a teenage lad.

Was it the Old Kings Head by any chance?

You may be right on that, and as El Pres says some people seem to get off on it just that little bit too much, things are very different now.

But equally, there is no point just burying your head in the sand and pretending none of this went on. If you attended football in the 70s and 80s, especially, it was there all around you as this fairly lengthy list proves. You could choose to stay out of it, or get involved.

I wonder if this thread would have been tolerated before the Falmer decision was made...
