I use Ulster Bank - they merged with NatWest in the late 1980's so I voted for NatWest - they're useless. It takes DAYS to transfers to come through normally, for isntance

That said, they haven't got any charges which sort of makes up for it

The young Miss Bracknell (currently in Oz) lost her wallet yesterday. A real bummer in itself - especially on Boxing Day, when you're the wrong side of Sydney Harbour at 10.30pm without a ticket home.

Just give her my number & she can kip on my floor! Easy!

I've been with Natwest for 11 years & they have been brilliant to me. Given me overdrafts at uni, loans after uni, and a mortgage. Can't complain at all

I made the same move over 15 years ago, for the following reason.

My account balance was £20 at the time
A DD came in for £30 which they bounced (fair enough). The reason they gave was "because under no circumstances is there an overdraft facility on your account"

(I'm sure you know whats coming next)

They placed a £35 charge on me for bouncing the DD

Net result - I was £5 further overdrawn than I would have been if they'd paid the DD - Despite "under no circumstances is there an overdraft facility on your account" - Oh unless of course we want to charge you. Wankers.

Who voted for First Direct and why?

I never thought I'd think so highly of a bank, but since I've been with them I've never had a bad experience.

You obviously have never fallen fowl of there bank charges then !!!!

I was once charged £132 in 1 month for being £2.37 over drawn !!!!

they are total crooks & when i challenged them about this they could not justify themselves.

I could not run them down enough they are utter utter wankers:censored:

When I was earning loads and spending little the Highly Shitey Banking Corporation bent over backwards to be nice to me, which I thought was odd considering I'd gone bankrupt less than a month before opening my account with them.

However, years later when I'd lost my job and decent income the attitude changed completely. As soon as my savings had dwindled and it became apparant I'd need an overdraft they started charging me every which way for practically any transaction I carried out on the account EVER.

It got to the point where the charges were getting ludicrously out of control and I simply stopped taking any notice of the account. Interest and fines are being added to the already huge negative balance every day but it's so far out of control I have no interest in paying them back. Every time I've tried to discuss this with them I get no help whatsoever. And, mysteriously, my personal banker who introduced herself to me in the days when my account was healthy, has gone AWOL, leaving me to deal with the muppets in Mumbai.

I have since opened a new Co-Operative Bank account and couldn't be more pleased. No arguing, the friendliest (UK based) call centre staff I've ever come across, and they don't rip you off or let you incur stupid charges. If only all banks were like this

So in conclusion:

SHIT - HSBC
TOP DOGS - Co-Operative

Since then I've been with TSB. As TSB they were brilliant which is why I kept the account all this time. Since they became Lloyds TSB I've sensed the "bottom line" coming more in to play and the customer service is being reduced almost daily (and soon, I hear I will be calling someone in Delhi to help me, brilliant, time to move banks methinks  )

Mumbai for base queries I do believe, my mother is running the supposed smooth transfer and has been back and forth to India more times in the last 9 months than I have had hot dinners. Don't count on the system being in place this side of the new millenium. They managed to send all the trainer people out there but forgot to order the technology for them to do anything so your bank fees paid for a three week jolly for about 45 people, they wouldn't let them come home because the tec stuff was arriving 'tomorrow, tomorrow.....'

My mothers refuses to bank with LTSB because they are so awful behind the scenes, she is quitting or trying to, they keep offering her more pennies because they don't have another mug ready to step into her place.

We bank with the co op and no complaints.

Halifax because of the adverts.

Never had any problems with Woolwich

As said above, Alliance and Leicester are a bit shoddy when it comes to how much you can withdraw, very slow on updating balance.

Way out west
I have been with Lloyds for over 20 years and they have been outstanding until the last two months. I did not get a replacement for my debit card at the end of March, phoned them up to chase it, two then arrived a couple of days apart. I then proceeded to use the first one, with my old pin number, for about three weeks or so. Then one day my card was denied, tried using the second one and that was too. Phoned the bank and they said that they would issue a new pin number for the second card and that I should use that one, the first had been cancelled. After about 10 days I had received nothing, so I went into the bank, the kind lady there ordered me another pin number...this took a week to arrive, however when it did the bloody thing wouldn't work.

Not being an expert in these matters I thought that the pin code may take a couple of days to be activated, I could still pay for stuff with the card but had to sign for it. Tonight I go to pay for my weekly shop and the card has been denied...I am now on hold with the bank and have been referred for the second time to the fraud department. I already know that this means my card will be suspended, it happened the first time.

Three strikes and they are out.

Abbey - what a useless bunch. I asked for a standing order to be cancelled at Slough branch. I was told I had to go on the phone and dial 2 to speak to someone in India. I said that was pathetic and demanded she did it as MY LOCAL BRANCH. She grumbled but then said it was done. I then find F-all was done and the £400 payment had gone out. When I complained they wanted exact details of who I spoke with, I just knew it was an asian girl to which they said they had no record and would do nothing - USELESS FUCKERS. in the process of legal action for bank charges and have added this incident to the list of complaints
