Bit harsh on Ruggiero, scored a great equaliser at the Dell opening gane of 77/78 season, giving me an Albion highlight.

I never expected most of the pub players we attracted in the gory years to be any good. Since they kept us in the league (just) you could argue even the worst of them were at least trying (possibly not Glen Thomas or Ashley Neal - but most of them).

But here we have someone with supposed big club pedigree, the proper show off Twitter account and WAG who was meant to IMPROVE us in the Championship who was perhaps the most useless and frustrating player of the entire Amex era (and he's taking on Akpom, Best and Obika).

I just remember him being wholly immobile and drilling freekicks in to the wall. Still, I was about 14 so my memory has been corrupted with various chemicals since then. I suppose I don't recall anyone ever slagging him off so I'll take your word for it.

It’s interesting this one, I’m focusing (this time, as this crops up quite regularly) on players who were (in my opinion) not great yet seemed to play every week without fail:

Paul McDonald, decent at home non existent away.
Gary Hobson, truly the slowest defender I can ever remember watching - and I watched him too many times for my sanity.
Andrew Whing, had his supporters - he was awful in my book, tried hard but suffered from a chronic lack of tangible ability.
George (immobile) Parris - couldn’t run, or even jog by the time he joined us - yet played virtually every game around our worst few seasons ever.

There were more I’m sure, and (yes) they all come from those darker days of yore - I guess, beggars couldn’t be choosers and it’s subjective too, BUT I was (and remain agog) amazed that lot amassed so many appearances between them ... truly astonished.

There were one or two who grew on me, Richie Barker: my God I thought he was absolutely awful when he arrived from Sheff Wed - soooo slow, terrible first touch, running perpetually in treacle... but he got better, slowly almost so slowly it wasn’t actually happening before he blossomed into a very decent lower league target man... a testimony to graft, tenacity and playing to your strengths.

Yeah - I remember him and saw him play I’m sure - fullback I see to recall, he wasn’t great but not the worst I’d seen around that period.

Don't agree with this. If Whiteside had not injured him in F A Cup final, Brighton may have won the game without extra time.

Agree with this, probably wouldn't have conceded the equaliser had he not had been assaulted by Shiteside, I remember turning to my mate when Wilkins (RIP) cut in from their right, saying no worries he never scores ! only for him to enleash that unstoppable shot ! Have learnt to keep my mouth shut since.

George Parris may well have b een physically slow, but he certainly had an agile mind, I well remember that occasion at the Goldstone where he lurked out of sight behind the goalkeeper, and as soon as the keeper dropped the ball ready to kick it downfield, Parris swiftly robbed him and turned the ball into the net. So funny!

Darren Hughes. Signed by Mullery from Shrewsbury on the strength of a good performance against us. He was shite in every game, then was sold to Port Vale and played against us in the very next game. Needless to say, he was brilliant and scored the winner. .

Take on board what you say, but to be fair to him, we did sign him right at the end of his career, so no great surprise that he had slowed right up by then.

Come to think of it, we have signed a lot of players either right at the beginning of successful careers, or taken them on right at the end. They did the business for other clubs, but not for us!
