It’s a damned shame but a lot of those good old pubs would simply close unless they appealed to families. It’s not good but I see why they do it. So few real pubs left. There’s a few in Shoreham. Lewes offers some good ones too. Quite a few in small villages around West Sussex. I come across a few on my walks.

yep , Red Lion , Duke of Wellington , Marlipins, Shoreham ,
Lewes arms , the one by the brewery , shame about the snowdrop , Lewes ,
The Bugle , The Pump House , The Victory, Brighton , any more for the list ?

Behind My Eyes
Crawley had a fine choice of really, really shit pubs when i lived there. Each neighbourhood when it was built was provided with a parade of shops with a church and a pub nearby and without exception all the pubs were crap. Built with only the worst materials and designed by people without a clue how to make a comfortable space the they were differentiated only by the people that used them. And for this reason my award for the worst of the worst goes to the Imperial ( formerly the Mark Lemon) of Broadfield where the combination of environment and clientele creates the pinnacle of the truly awful Crawley Boozer Experience. Rather liked the Swan, Brewery Shades (my man was invariably in there) and The Rocket though.

eh?! The Rocket was a great pub!

The pub in Washington (near Storrington) was the most unwelcoming pub I've ever been in although I think it's shut down now,

The ones that i find the WORST , are the ones that used to be nice n grungy real ale boozers , and have now been ponced up with candles and flowers on every table , any of the ex-pubs in southover/Hanover /Elm grove /queens park , (Brighton ) and anywhere else this has happened ..

With ‘Artesan’s’ burger and quadruple cooked chips, served on a slate. Yours for just £13.50.

When I moved back to the area I needed to rent for six months whilst looking for a home. The nice estate agent told me that Emerald Quay would be a good base and it had a gym, club and "marina"! We went for it and moved in, this is around Summer '98.

Normally went over to Shoreham or into Brighton for a drink but went to the Waterside one Friday afternoon, oh my! They'd had some stock reclaimed or something and only had random bottles of drink, it wasn't a great experience!

In Wisborough Green? Not really my cup of tea but certainly not the worst.

I quite like that place, nice beer, good food and not a bad setting, what's not to like? (* I only use for business lunches so haven't seen it evenings and weekends)

West is BEST
No the one opposite The Level in Brighton, opens early so the 'clientele' are usually waiting outside for it to open from 9.30.

Dark, dingy and dodgy customers.

One of about 5 pubs I have never set foot in around Brighton. One of those pubs even a stranger to town would be able to tell from the outside that’s it’s not even worth trying!

Whilst there are some shockers around, I'd vote for The Burrell Arms in Burgess Hill. I accept it was about 5 years ago, and perhaps its upped it's game since(?); but when we walked in the classic silence and stares a plenty were nerve wracking enough. The manly lady at the end of the bar surrounded by family members mouthing off and play fighting - someone fell in to our table, but it was ok as it was 'just banter'. One of the clan also wandered up to us and said menacingly 'I think you should probably leave'; we did!

Add the disgusting toilets, elderly fellers about to drop of their perch making very weiird noises and some very loud non descript 80s rock and you have the most uncomfortable 15 mins of my adult drinking life.

Honourable mention to the Seafiled in Hove; and also what used to be The Kendal near Aldrington station (gentrified these days) for passing around a folder of rascist jokes! Classy

Up and Coming Sunny Portslade
Whilst pubs closing down generally depresses me I have to admit to heaving a sigh of relief when The Gardners in Portslade finally closed. It somehow managed the twin trick of being extremely menacing and yet having less atmosphere than your average MK Dons home game. The beer was appalling and I avoided the crisps for fear of catching something that a specialist Tropical Disease unit couldn't fix.

These days I quite like that Portslade has a diverse choice. Beardy craft at The Foghorn, drunk lesbian families with toddlers in The Railway and The Vic for football and general proper-pubness. Just a shame The Blue Anchor stopped showing footy.

East of Eastbourne
An honary mention for the Kingfisher Tavern in Langney Shopping Centre, Eastbourne. Is it the worst in Sussex? Well, one step at a time - it's probably won the Eastbourne title IMO, now The Gildredge has been subsumed by the Arndale extension.

The Imperial makes the pub in Shameless look classy.

Like most of the pubs in residential areas of Crawley. When they built all the estates, each had its own pub included as part of the design along with the parade of shops. Nearly all these pubs, including the Imperial and the one in Bewbush whose name escapes me, are horrific (mostly flat-roofed classics).
