Stokes is bang on the money here: Bradman scores a single off the second ball but Hayden can’t get it away. And Underwood continues to tease Bradman who can just manage a two off the over

Stokes tries a slower ball but that doesn’t work – it’s over-pitched and Hayden drives through mid-off for four. He helps himself to a jogged single.
Hayden then scores a single off the first ball of Underwood’s over but that’s loose and Bradman cuts it for four. He’s then down the pitch for another one – Underwood looks tired, this is has been a long stint of 19 overs and he looks like he’s getting a rest.

It’s still Stokes and Hayden can’t get him away easily. There’s an edged two to third man and that’s it for the over.
Larwood is replacing Underwood. He really wanted to be bowling at Bradman early on, not now. Bradman smashes him through the covers, takes an easy single and then watches Hayden help himself to another two.

There’s another bowling change. Botham’s coming back at the Anderson end and Bradman flicks him away for a single. Hayden then scores two down to deep extra cover.
It’s Larwood in again and Bradman is still looking to get after him, that’s hoiked to square leg for another boundary and then a single to third man. Hayden runs a single off the final ball.

Australia 224-1 (Hayden 99 Bradman 92) overs 58

It’s Botham to Hayden. He’s on 99, how are his nerves? He fishes outside the off stump and grimaces. Botham grins and delivers another big swinger that Hayden leaves. The next ball also swings away and catches the edge … but finds the gap and it runs to third man for a single. That’s Hayden’s hundred and he waves his bat in wild celebration.
Bradman’s turn now and he creams it through the covers for a three – that would have been a four on a harder wicket.

Larwood’s in to Bradman – this could be the last over of the day. Will Bradman play it safe or will he try to score his ton tonight. You know the answer to this? He comes down the track and eases it to deep mid-wicket but that’s brilliantly fielded by Anderson, he prevents the four and they just run two. But there’s no mistaking this one – that’s cracked square and it’s Bradman’s third hundred of the series - what a way to end the day.

Close of play score: Australia 234-1 (Hayden 100 Bradman 101) overs 60

I'm sorry I missed this earlier but this is the record 2nd wicket partnership for Australia v England at Old Trafford, just beating Bill Brown and Stan McCabe's in 1934. The highest by any country at Old Trafford is 238 by Jacques Kallis and Gary Kirsten in 1998 - just 41 to go.

I saw Michael Slater and Geoff Marsh put on 260 once - that was a tough watch

If this isn't running away with it, what is?!

350 plus on the first day is running away with it. Aussie middle order hasn't been brilliant so far in the series so get these two early tomorrow and still a chance of keeping them below 400. Clearly a good pitch so we should get a few runs as well.

30 overs were lost to rain. Let's see what the lunch score is!

Morning all. The rain seems to have passed at it looks good for today.

We’re starting half an hour early to make up for lost time. And it’s Anderson from the Anderson end once more. Hayden gets off the mark instantly with a clipped single to leg and Bradman continues where he left off last night with a scorching on drive for four – that’s the 200 partnership. There’s a bit of cloud cover about but the batsmen were untroubled in that over.
It’s Larwood from the Statham end and that’s a bit more pressure from the bowler – it’s fast and bounces, Hayden can only just keep it down. And that’s another ripper, it catches the edge of the bat and flies over Hammond’s head for another four. Larwood bowls a fierce yorker that Hayden only just keeps out. The last ball of the over catches his glove and could have gone anywhere, but it falls safely in no-man’s land.

Anderson’s is getting some reverse swing now and gets Hayden groping a couple of times. He gets a thick outside edge that just evades a despairing dive from Stokes in the gully and they take a single. Bradman looks more solid and sees out the over.
Larwood beats Hayden three times in a row – the batsman doesn’t look comfortable out there today. He takes a quick single to square leg – that looked like a batsman who doesn’t fancy facing Larwood. Bradman is more composed and pushes sweetly for two through mid-wicket.

That’s another class delivery from Anderson, Hayden is left baffled. He does him again and that’s up in the air over mid-wicket. The batsmen scramble two to bring up the 250. Hayden then shapes to off drive but it swings late and the ball is pouched by Hammond at first slip – the breakthrough at last.

Steve Smith comes in, up the order, and immediately punches the ball to the mid-wicket boundary to get off the mark. He then runs the ball to long leg for a single and pinch the strike.
Larwood bowls Smith a brute of a ball, it flies over his head and just out of reach of Prior. There’s no signal from umpire Bucknor so Smith must have got a glove on that – a possible chance, although a very difficult one. He gets something on this though – Larwood over-pitches and Smith smashes it through the covers.
He gets another brute from Larwood, he can’t get on top of it and can only push it to Gower at short leg. All the fielders go up and Bucknor raises the finger of doom. Smith has to go.

Australia 263-3 Smith c Gower b Larwood 13

How often do we see two wickets fall quickly at the end of a long stand? Chappell is the next man in and he sees off the final two balls of Larwood’s over.

Bradman has watched his partners go without seeing much of the action. He takes no risks in the Anderson over and plays out a maiden.
Larwood has built up a head of steam now and beats Chappell outside the off stump and sends one flying past his nose. He finally gets of the mark but it’s not a convincing shot, it’s a rather uppish paddle to long leg – that could easily have gone to hand.

There’s a bowling change now: the new ball is due in 12 overs so I imagine that Hammond wants to keep his bowlers fresh. It’s Underwood on from the Anderson end - he bowled from the other end yesterday - and Chappell squeezes him away for two through the covers. He runs him down to long leg for a single and then Bradman cuts him to third man for his first run for some time
It’s still Larwood at the other end though and Bradman plays him circumspectly, taking a single off the final ball of the over.

Underwood bowls out a maiden to Bradman – he’s taking no risks at the moment. Chappell hits his first four of the morning when Larwood over-pitches outside off and then gets another off an inside edge down to fine leg.

It’s Underwood once more and this time Bradman finds a gap between mid-off and extra cover and they run two. He then takes one to square leg,
It’s another over from Larwood – looks like he won’t be taking the new ball and Bradman plays him with ease – just the one single off his pads.

Australia 281-3 (Bradman 113 Chappell 12) overs 74

Here’s a rare thing: an over-pitched ball from Underwood that Chappell lazily drives through mid-off. There’s a frantic chase from Compton and Chappell’s kept to three. Bradman takes a single past mid-on.
This is unexpected: Hammond is giving himself a bowl – maybe he’ll shock the batsmen into giving away a wicket. But his first ball is short and it’s leathered by Bradman to the mid-wicket boundary, Bradman drives the next one for another four and then takes a single. Chappell gets in on the act with a sweetly timed off drive for four.

Australia 298-3 (Bradman 123 Chappell 19) overs 76
