Come on now, this can't drop down to Page 3!

We need a Selectors Meeting for the Fourth Test, Cook out and Hutton in I say!

Morning Richie, morning all

The forecast is not good this morning and there’s expected to be some rain around today. The pitch looks good for batting and is expected to take some turn on the fourth or fifth day.

Both teams have made changes: Border has come in for Ponting – the Aussies probably want another spin option - but the rest of the team is unchanged. They did look at replacing Hayden with Morris but the burly opener gets another chance.

For England, Hutton has come in for Cook. The selectors did look at Barnes and Verity but have decided to keep to the same attack as Edgbaston. Gower and Compton probably need to make some runs though; it’s no secret that Hammond has not been happy with their cavalier approach to batting.
The other change is at umpire. Australia’s protests about Billy Bowden have been heard and he’s been replaced by Steve Bucknor: Dave Orchard is the other umpire and Aleem Dar is in the DRS room.

And the news is, for the first time this series, Bradman has won the toss and has decided to bat. A bold decision that: there’s a fair bit of cloud around and it may be tricky for the first hour or so.

We’ve had a bit of drizzle in the last few minutes. The covers are on and the start is going to be delayed. It doesn’t look too bad and we should be under way before lunch.

The players are coming out now. There are lot of sweaters on out there, this is a rather typical Manchester day.

Anderson’s going to have first dibs -from the James Anderson end, of course - and he’s bowling to Hayden. He has four slips, a gully, a short mid-wicket, a long leg, cover and mid-off. And he won’t be happy with that: his first ball is too straight and Hayden clips it off his pads for an easy four. The second ball is better, beating him outside off and the third ball is better still, shaping to go down leg but seaming away from Hayden just missing bat and stumps – nearly an edge. And that is an edge! But it skims along the ground between third and fourth slips. There’s no third man, so that’s four more. Hayden meets the last two balls with a solid defence.
Larwood at the Statham end – he has a leg gully and short leg – so there’s a bigger gap in the slips. But Trumper plays him easily to leg and running two. He lets the next two go and then pushes into the covers. Hayden blocks the last two balls.

Anderson is right on the spot to Trumper and he can only block. He’s then beaten by a beauty that moved away at the last moment. He lets the next one go and finishes the over by mis-timing a shot to leg - it’s slightly uppish but was never a real chance to Underwood at short mid-wicket.
Larwood is steaming in now and generating some real pace. Trumper always looks the one Australian who’s not fazed by the England speedster and he handles the first couple of deliveries comfortably. He nudges to long leg for a single and leaves Hayden to face. The left-hander is more ill at ease and is hit a nasty blow on his thigh. He just ducks the next one in time – Larwood’s looking really hostile now.

Australia 13-0 (Hayden 8 Trumper 5) overs 4

That’s a good ball from Anderson; Trumper drives rather loosely and it’s straight into Stokes’ hands at third slip. He indicates it didn’t carry though – that was close. And he’s beaten again by one that jags back. Trumper decides to take some drastic action and he’s down the wicket and drives Anderson through mid-off; it’s not properly timed and it’s rather uppish but he gets away with it and it goes for four. He pinches the strike with a single.
He looks more at ease against Larwood – he drives him through the covers for four and hooks a bouncer for another one – that was in the air for a bit but Anderson couldn’t reach it in time. He’s in the groove now and on drives now, it’s not time but they run three as Compton gives chase from mid-off. Hayden gets on strike and gets a rather lucky single to long on – he didn’t get hold of that at all.

Australia 30-0 (Hayden 9 Trumper 21) overs 6

Anderson beats Hayden again and then fools him with a slower ball, he completely mis-times the shot and gets a leading edge but it lands safely in front of Hobbs at mid-off. And that’s a ripsnorter – it catches the edge of Trumper’s bat and flies over Prior’s outstretched glove for a streaky four. He plays out the rest of the over safely.
Larwood is really troubling Hayden – he plays and misses three times in a row and then is struck again. He sees out a rather tricky maiden – he could have gone a couple of times there.

Australia 35-0 (Hayden 10 Trumper 25) overs 8

Jimmy continues to Trumper. The opener is decidedly ill at ease against this attack and is beaten once more. He can only block the next two and then gets a less than convincing two through mid-wicket. And that’s even less convincing, Trumper tries to drive but is not on top of that and it flies to Hutton at second slip – that’s an easy catch and the breakthrough for England

Australia 37-1 Trumper c Hutton b Anderson 27

That was the end of the over so it’s Larwood to Hayden. He blocks the first few but then gets off strike with a single. Bradman faces the Nottinghamshire paceman and sees the first ball whistle past his ear. He gets of strike with a single to the covers and Hayden sees out the over.

Australia 39-1 (Hayden 11 Bradman 1) overs 10

It’s still Anderson and he’s bang on the money: Bradman can’t get him away and nearly edges the last ball to Prior – that’s his first maiden of the day.
Hayden seems to be getting the measure of Larwood and is now getting behind the ball – he blocks the first few and then unfurls a glorious on-drive for four. He takes a single to long leg off the last ball.

It’s still Anderson plugging away but Hayden seems to settling in now. He comfortably plays out the over, taking two to mid-wicket off the first ball and a cheeky single in the covers off the final one.
Larwood must be itching to have a crack at Bradman but it’s still Hayden and that’s a loose one that’s flicked to fine leg for four, bringing up the 50 Those are the only runs of the over though.

Australia 51-1 (Hayden 23 Bradman 1) overs 14

Anderson continues but he must be nearing the end of his spell. Bradman watches the first three balls carefully and then square drives for four, he on drives for two and takes a single to extra cover.
Larwood finally has Bradman in his sights but this is his eighth over and Bradman hooks a short ball to mid wicket for four. There’s still some venom left in the bowler and he beats him with a fast beauty that’s just back of a length but he finishes with another that’s way off the pace and that’s four more.

Australia 66-1 (Hayden 23 Bradman 16) overs 16
