Not much in the locker when the current pair are out, hopefully they hang around and get England at least past 200, a 100 lead would be a bonus. Can't see either Anderson or Underwood getting many.

Are you dissing the Burnley Lara? And Underwood did, late in his career, get a ton against Sussex. I'm not sure how as he was a pretty poor batsman

Well we shall see, are you at the ground yet? Mrs Jakarta and I are having a drive into the Countryside and then down to Sunny Bognor to stroll along the Seafront as the weather is so good and I have pretty well finished all my Reports. So may not contribute much until the afternoon session when I look forward to Anderson's maiden Century...

Presume weather is similar in Brum this morning?

Early morning mist but that's clearing - it looks a good day for batting

There'll be a delayed report after lunch as I have to go out

Excellent news, do we know who is ringing the bell, surely Captain Sir Tom must do it at some point in the Series, hopefully wearing his England Cap?

Isn't that just at Lord's?

He may be doing a View from the Boundary at some point - after Boris Karloff's had his turn

It’s Lillee who gets us underway from the Pavilion end and it’s Larwood to face. That’s bang on the money and the Nottingham man meets it with the full face of the bat. That’s quicker and Larwood is groping for that and that’s even quicker, it flies past Larwood’s left lug-hole, evades a diving Gilchrist and clatters against the advertising hoarding – first byes of the match. And that’s a no-ball, Larwood takes a wild swing, it disappears in the no-man’s land of mid-off and they run three. Hammond is right in line against Lillee and helps himself to a single to long-leg.
Thomson is on at the other end. Hammond sees off a couple of balls and then flicks a single. Larwood has a big drive and that’s over slips for another boundary.

England 192-7 (Hammond 61 Larwood 12) overs 60

Lillee to Larwood – the ball is behaving itself after yesterday’s antics. Hammond is not troubled by any delivery and then pushes a single. Larwood blocks the rest of the over.
And there’s little worry for Thomson either, a drive through mid-off brings two but he fails to get the single to give him the strike,

England 195-7 (Hammond 64 Larwood 12) overs 62

This could be interesting: Lillee is in full flow now and he fancies having a go at Larwood but that’s a cracking shot, he meets it with the full face of the bat and it’s smashed through mid-off. He tries it again but that’s not what was intended, it sails over cover’s head for two – that’s the 200 up. Larwood’s beaten by a snorter though … and again.
Hammond looks untroubled by Thomson and feels confident to take a single. Larwood has a swing and misses – he connects this time though! That flies over square leg for six. Larwood is now bullish enough to take the single

England 209-7 (Hammond 65 Larwood 25) overs 64

Lillee is still in the groove though and flies one through Larwood’s defences. The batsman has decided that he may as well die by the sword and smashes it to cow corner for four. He tries to repeat the shot but it goes flying over Gilchrist’s head for another four. Lillee pitches the next one up and it’s a fast yorker that makes a mess of Larwood’s stumps

England 217-8 (Larwood b Lillee 33 Hammond 65 Anderson 0)

Hammond has decided that it’s time to move things on and drives Thomson to extra cover for four. He can’t do much about the next couple though. He decides to risk the single and leave Anderson at the mercy of Thomson but he keeps him out OK

England 222-8 (Hammond 70 Anderson 0) overs 66

Hammond struggles to get Lillee away – he’s on the spot every time. That’s over-pitched though and Hammond flicks it to mid-wicket for two and that’s a two through mid-off but he can’t score off the last two balls.
Thomson steams in to Anderson and that’s seriously quick, has Anderson groping for the ball. The Burnley Lara has a big swing at the next one and it’s a four over Miller’s head. The next one is a brute of a ball, rising off a length at Anderson’s throat, it hits his glove and lobs gently to Ponting in the gully

England 230-9 Anderson c Ponting b Thomson 4

Underwood is immediately playing and missing and is then hit on the chest guard. He instinctively backs away from the final ball of the over and that’s made a mess of his stumps. England all out for 230, a lead of 111

Underwood b Thomson 0 Hammond 74 not out

It’s Anderson to get us under way and Hayden facing. The batsman is aware that he’s due a big score and he’s looking to get off the mark straight away but that bowling is too accurate and we start with a maiden.
Larwood is on at the Birmingham end – England opened with Botham yesterday but that was a greener pitch. Trumper looks to get off the mark straight away and steers it through the covers for two. That’s a better from Larwood that skids on catches Trumper on the glove. The batsman runs one down to long leg

Australia 3-0 (hayden 0 Trumper 3)

Anderson is in a groove and gets a bit of movement away from Trumper and then cramps him up as it jags back. But that’s a great shot, Trump gets well forward and eases it through mid-off for the first four of the innings.
Hayden is more circumspect against Larwood, who’s already building up some pace, he gets nicely in line against him and gets off the mark with a clip down to Anderson at long leg.

Australia 8-0 (Hayden 1 Trumper 7) overs 4

Anderson wasting a few balls here, he sends several deliveries wide of the off stump, easy enough for Hayden to let them go. He then strays on to Hayden’s pads and it’s played wide of square leg for a gentle two.
Larwood is much more demanding: that’s a fierce yorker that Trumper does well to dig out and that’s a nasty lifter, that he just manages to avoid. But that’s a beautifully timed shot - little more than a push – and it goes wide of mid-on where Compton fields. Two more to Trumper and that’s the over.

Australia 12-0 (Hayden 3 Trumper 9) overs 6

It’s another tight over from Anderson, Hayden makes little attempt to play at several wide ones while he’s content to block the rest.
Trumper, on the other hand, is looking a bit impatient. He comes down the wicket to Larwood – not the wisest move – and gets horribly tangled up with a ball at his body. He drives at another that only just misses the edge and that one does catch the edge – between third slip and gully and races away for four. Trumper learns some interesting Nottinghamshire dialect words from the bowler in return.

Australia 16-0 (Hayden 3 Trumper 13) overs 8

Now Hayden does come out of his shell and cracks Anderson through the covers for a glorious four, he tries it again but that’s smartly stopped by Hobbs in the covers. He helps himself to a sharp single to nick the strike.
He’s also looking more confident against Larwood and looks to score, driving again to Hobbs. He gets that one away though, a half-drive, half-push to wide mid-on for a single. Trumper gets in on the act with a drive through the covers for two.

Australia 24-0 (Hayden 9 Trumper 15) overs 10

Botham is bowling better now: he beats Trumper with a couple of beauties and then cramps him up with an off-cutter. He scores a single but it’s not convincingly played.
Larwood is running in again but the pace has dropped – that registered 85mph and Trumper looks comfortable. There’s an easy two to wide mid-on and a single to long leg. Larwood looks tired now and is last ball is slower and shorter, Hayden cuts it away with ease to the point boundary.
Australia 43-0 (Hayden 18 Trumper 25) overs 14
Botham has got into the groove now and sends down a maiden to Trumper – the batsman playing for lunch now.
Underwood has replaced Larwood and he immediately drops the ball into the slot. Hayden doesn’t relish being tied down and uses his feet to get down the track and push a single. Trumper plays off the back foot and gets a single to long leg.

Australia 45-0 (Hayden 19 Trumper 26) overs 16

Botham to Trumper again. He blocks the first few balls but that’s slightly over-pitched, it’s eased through mid-off for two. Trumper sees out the rest of the over.
Hayden blocks Underwood too, there’s a single to square leg and then Trumper meets the last couple of balls with a resolute forward defensive. That’s lunch

Australia 48-0 (Hayden 20 Trumper 28) overs 18
