Australia in real trouble here and Gilchrist has decided the best form of defence is attack and swings Botham’s first ball for four. His next ball flies off the edge but is still four, he tries to send it into the river but it catches the splice and goes high in the air, Compton is at mid-on and takes a comfortable catch. The sixth wicket down and a five-fer for Botham.

Australia 65-6 Gilchrist c Compton b Botham 8 Trumper 25 Miller 0 overs 14

Larwood comes charging in to Trumper, who seems to be playing on a different wicket to everyone else. He gets into line until the last ball, helped gently to long leg for a single.
Botham’s on his eighth over now but still produces a peach to beat Trumper but the opener is down the pitch for the next ball and fires it past the bowler for four. And then it’s an easy single. Miller helps himself to two off the final ball.

Australia 73-6 Trumper 31 Miller 2 overs 16

That’s the end of the fireworks for the morning. Trumper and Miller have the measure of Larwood, Underwood has replaced Botham and has been tidy, apart from one loose ball that was swept by Miller for four.

Australia 93-6 Trumper 40 Miller 13 overs 24

Larwood has been taken off and replaced by Stokes. But that’s a poor ball, cracked away for four by Trumper and that’s a repeat shot –that’s the 100 for Australia. He pushes the ball through the covers for a single. But that’s a beauty by Stokes, it catches the edge and Prior gleefully accepts the catch.

Australia 102-7 Miller c Prior b Stokes 13

Warne comes in and is nearly bowled first ball but keeps it out.
Underwood to Trumper and that’s classic Trumper, he dances down the pitch and it’s driven sweetly through mid-off – that’s Trumper’s 50. He sees out the rest of the over.

Australia 106-7 Trumper 53 Warne 0 overs 26

Stokes to Warne and that’s cracked away for four, good shot that and the next ball is driven back firmly but he hasn’t kept it down, that’s a fantastic catch by Stokes. That ball was travelling, low down and Stokes had to make a reactive dive to his right. Warne throws his head back in despair - so near lunch too

Australia 110-8 Warne c and b Stokes 4

Lillee sees of the rest of the over and Trumper takes a single off Underwood’s over.

That’s lunch with Australia on Nelson – 111-8

I think we know which team will enjoy their tucker more: we’ll be back after lunch.

And in Beyond the Boundary today, Aggers will be talking to today’s guest, Arthur Conan Doyle about the time he bowled WG Grace and what sort of cricketer, Sherlock Holmes would be.

Fascinating chat with Sir Arthur there. No surprise to hear that Holmes was not a cricket buff but a bit of surprise to hear that Dr Watson was a decent fast medium bowler. I wonder if Holmes would have any advice to Australia to get themselves out of the mess they find themselves in

We’re back and there’s an excited buzz around the ground after that flurry of wickets.
Anderson gets us underway from the Pavilion end and, just like this morning, he overpitches and it’s cracked away for four. Trumper follows up with a tickle to long leg for one.

Anderson to Lillee. And that’s a beauty, it comes skidding into Lillee, he’s plumb in front and umpire Orchard raises the dreaded finger. He’s not going to review that – he couldn’t be more out if the middle stump was lying on the ground

Australia 116-9 Lillee lbw b Anderson 0 overs 29

That ball really was shockingly plumb: he was pinned on the back foot right in front, ball hitting middle stump. Botham is back from the other end. Trumper helps himself to two and takes a single off the third ball, Thomson blocks the first but the next one gets an edge and Prior takes the catch

That's it - innings over

Australia 119 all out

Not far off the infamous Bannerman record there for Trumper.

There’s still a tinge of green but the cloud cover is beginning to disperse. This looks decent for batting, all England have to do is survive the first hour or so and dig in tomorrow.

Of course, Lillee has other ideas and his first ball is a rip-snorter, flying past Cook’s nose. He blocks the next couple though and he gets off the mark with a single to long leg. Hobbs looks to score quickly and takes two of the last ball of the over.

Doesn't look like there will be much play on Saturday...

Seriously there is every chance England could fold for 150-200 and we have a game.

I love low scoring games personally - 2006 C&G Final anyone?

Thomson over-pitches and that’s crashed through mid-wicket by Cook. He looks comfortable off the rest of the over however, stealing a single off the last ball.

England 8-0 Cook 6 Hobbs 2 overs 2

Lillee beats Cook again. And the next ball is a good one, slanting across Cook and holding its line – there’s a big appeal and umpire Orchard gives it. Cook thinks about a review but decides against it.

England 8-1 Cook lbw b Lillee 6
