Chappell’s neat and tidy – Hammond clips a two to square leg but nothing from the rest of the over. Botham is swinging his arm now, he looks ready to have a crack at Warne. And he does – he’s down the wicket and that’s in the second tier; a massive, massive six. He looks ready to do it again and Warne drops it too short, that’s cracked through point for two. He unveils a sweep now – that’s four just beneath the scoreboard. Warne grins to himself, I wonder what he has up his sleeve. That’s pushed wider and Botham goes for another big hit but there’s too much turn and bounce on that, it’s up in the air by mid-wicket … and Ponting holds on to the catch
England 187-6 Botham c Ponting b Warne 23, Hammond 21 Prior 0, overs 66
Prior played sensibly in the first innings and he’s having an earnest chat with Hammond now. It’s the captain to face Chappell though and he plays the first ball straight past the bowler for a fine boundary. And there’s some savage treatment for Chappell as that’s dropped short and it’s crashed away for four more. He finally helps himself to a single.
Warne to Hammond and there’s some solid play now, he steers one into the covers and Prior’s off the mark with a single to long leg.
Thomson has replaced Chappell at the Pavilion end and that’s too full and Prior cracks it to the point boundary – that’s 200 up. He scores a single and keeps the strike.
He tries to come down the wicket to Warne but that’s not there for driving. He tries again and that turns sharply, it beats Gilchrist too and that’s four byes. He cracks that one though, beautifully cut away for four.
Thomson hurtles in again and Hammond calmly places that wide of a diving Gilchrist – that would have been some catch – and it crashes to the fine leg boundary. And that’s a classily driven single – that’s far too good a shot for one run.
Prior looks busy and shovels Thomson away to mid-wicket – they run two. He’s on the back foot again, trying to repeat the shot it’s too full and he’s struck on the pad. Billy Bowden gives him out – they’re going upstairs with this but that looked out to me.
Rudi Koertzen has confirmed the decision – Prior has to go. Larwood blocks the last ball.
England 218 -7 (Prior lbw b Thomson 12, Hammond not out 36, Larwood not out 0, overs 71)
Hammond does want to get a move on now, he dances down the wicket and hit straight over the bowler’s head, four more. And that’s a delicate shot, a little nudge to third man – they run three. Larwood blocks a couple from Warne – probably having a sighter. And, bang, there it goes, one bounce into cow corner.
Hammond can’t get Thomson away so easily but does get one to leg. Larwood has a hefty swipe but misses.
Warne again to Hammond, he’s right on the money and Hammond can only get a single.
Hammond hits a classy two of the first ball of Thomson’s over and follows up with a single, Larwood has a huge swipe and clears Gilchrist’s head, first bounce to the boundary.
And that’s beautiful from Hammond, he moves into Warne’s first ball and powers to the extra cover fence – that’s his 50, really valuable runs for England, he hits a smart single too. Larwood has seen enough of Warne he’s down the pitch and carted him to long on for six. He tries to repeat the shot but it’s a fraction wider, there’s a bit more turn and Gilchrist has the bails whipped off in an instant.
England 249-8 (Larwood st Gilchrist b Warne 14, Hammond 52, Anderson 0, overs 76)
It’s Hammond facing Thomson. There’s a single anywhere he wants it but he resists. He takes one off the fourth ball though. Anderson keeps the ball out however.
Hammond takes a single early on, he trusts Anderson more against Warne, who promptly misses a googly by a whisker, he then edges through the slips for two and is beaten by a big leg break.
England 253-8 (Hammond 54 Anderson 2, overs 78)
Time for one more over before tea. Thomson into Hammond, who carts it over mid-off for four. He takes a single off the fifth ball and Anderson sees them home safely,
Tea score: England 258-8 (Hammond 59 Anderson 2, overs 79)
We’re back and it’s Warne to resume – the last over before a new ball can be taken. Hammond plays carefully and takes two. He tries to get a single but there’s no joy and now Anderson must face the music.
It’s Lillee with the new cherry and he fires it into Anderson and that’s slashed over slips for a flashing four. Anderson does well to keep the next few out but that’s a nasty lifter, it takes him on the gloves and lobs to Ponting in the gully.
England 264-9 (Anderson c Ponting b Lillee 6, Hammond 61 Underwood 0)
Underwood keeps Lillee’s last ball out and it’s Thomson against Hammond who plays him carefully, he takes a single off the fourth ball, leaving Underwood to face two balls – he doesn’t manage it, the first ball is straight and fast, Underwood backs away and the middle stump is knocked clean out. It’s all over for England

We’re back underway at its Anderson from the Pavilion End who gets us started – minimum of 23 overs. Hayden gets a short rising ball on leg and he’s off the mark with a couple. And that’s two more as Anderson doesn’t quite get his line right and Hayden steers it into the covers.
Larwood, who else, is on at the Nursery End and Trumper carves him away for a boundary. He then gets a nasty one on the hand but shrugs it off. He sees out the rest of the over without incident.
Anderson is getting a bit of swing and beats Hayden a couple of times. But he overpitches there, it goes past the bowler and Compton gives chase from mid-off – they run three.
Now it’s Hayden facing Larwood – he got hit a couple of times in the first innings and that’s a brute of a delivery, rising sharply and just past Gower who’s drawn the short straw of a very silly mid-on. Hayden gets off the strike. Trumper looks more confident and pushes for an easy two.
Australia playing it steadily now, both batsmen seem to have the measure of Anderson’s swing and Larwood’s pace. Hayden has crashed Anderson for a superb four off his legs and Trumper has hit Larwood for two more fours
Anderson into Trumper again and that’s ferociously put away for four through the covers. He’s now down the pitch and that’s a three wide of mid-on: Hayden finishes the over with a two.
Larwood to Trumper who delicately glances for one, and that’s a nasty bouncer that flies over Hayden and Prior for four byes. And Hayden plays confidently for two more.
It’s Beefy time – that’s wide and short, Trumper cracks it away to bring up the 50. He turns it away for one more and Hayden now drives for four more.
It’s a double change, Underwood is on for some control and it works, just the single off the over
Botham again and Trumper runs that down to third man for two. He doesn’t time that one though; the ball swings late, he gets a nick and Prior accepts the catch gleefully
Bradman is not hanging around though and drives Botham’s first ball for four and nicks the strike with a single.
He fancies Underwood too and dances down the pitch to him, clipping the ball wide of mid-on for four. And that’s not short but he’s turned it a short delivery and cuts it for two. He then takes a single leaving Hayden to play out the over.
