We must have been at the same games. Like a few of the players in those days, I think he was also a pretty useful foottballer too. I've got a very soft spot for the late Kenny Suttle of that era who was also a very decent footballer (Chelsea?). Not only a fellow Worthing resident (as is Jim Parks these days) but he used to contribute a column called 'The Suttle Side of Cricket' in the local rag. I used to feast on this every week. It was mostly about sitting around in the rain in places like Worksop playing cards! Epic stuff.
Of course cricket was pretty much dying in the 60s (financially) but the texture of the county game had great appeal - all those obscure out-grounds (Hastings, T. Wells, Clacton and scores more), all the characters (Colin Milburn springs to mind), the excitement of seeing world class overseas players (Barry Richards) and the anticipation of seeing touring teams (the '66 West Indies). Great stuff for a schoolboy with a summer to while away.

Ah memories! I went with my dad and brother to watch the 1966 West Indians at Canterbury (or was it the 1963 tour?). I took photos with my Brownie from the boundary of all those great tall West Indians in the field. But when I got them developed, all you could see was random minuscule black men who seemed hundreds of yards away, no idea who any of them were.

I was lucky enough to be at the 1963 Gillette Cup final - I guess you were too?

Totally envy your attendance at the Gillette but I was only 8 and hadn't started going to cricket yet at that time. (Charlie Griffiths - alleged chucker - broke Ken Suttle's jaw I think - and he still batted on, never missing a match.)

I was at the final of '78 when we beat the hotly fancied Somerset team - Botham et al.

Please don't take this personally but I bloody hated Kent (local rivals).

There's three Waugh brothers. Their younger brother Dean only had a very brief and patchy career playing state cricket - one Sheffield Shield game, and a handful of domestic one day games over a couple of seasons. Oddly, for such a limited career, he still managed to play in 2 semi-finals. For different states. Lost both.
