just had a look at the bidding nations

as far as i can see it, our main rivals are usa, russia & australia

spain/portugal and netherlands/belgium are both bids, and blatter said that joint bids would be discounted if suitable individual bids are available

the other bidder is japan who joint hosted the tournament in 2002, so would be a bit shit if they got it

i know that our 'history' is one of our main factors, but does it really matter if we have a couple of 'historyless' cities in our bid, when our rivals have basically NO football history whatsoever?

There is no guarantee the MK would get to host games if we won the World Cup bid anyway. If England win the bid in 2010 it then is up to FIFA to decide on what grounds to have in 2013.

Russia, no football history ???

America shouldn't get it on the same grounds as Japan as it would only have been 24 years sice the last World Cup there.

Russia, no football history ???

pretty much! you'd think a country the size of russia would've done a lot more in competitions, it hasn't produced many winners in european club competitions (two uefa cup winners fairly recently i know) and they don't have that many big STADIO's (they currently have ONE stadium over 40,000)

plus what with their BILLION times zones it'd be a logistical NIGHTMARE

just been having a THINK and i know it's quite POMPOUS, but if you divide the hosts of world cups into those which are commonly regarded as ESTABLISHED football nations and those which aren't, since 1982 there is a pattern

1982- SPAIN

1986- was supposed to be colombia, was actually in mexico

1990- ITALY

1994- usa

1998- FRANCE

2002- japan/korea

2006- GERMANY

2010- south africa

2014- BRAZIL

2018- ?

not sure if it's deliberate, but "ESTABLISHED" football nations have tended to host the tournament every other time, so could fifa go for an "EMERGING" football nation for 2018?
