dont ever say you cant remember - not under ANY circumstances

say you didnt say it and stick to that

suggest under pressure if you must that maybe the other person misheard or misunderstood something - after all THEY had been drinking
This would be my approach, I'd also add that I thought the staff affected did a good job.

(ps is it affected or effected?)

I'm just glad I don't work for this kind of corporate bollocks. People say what they like in our business and it would never lead to a problem like this particularly as it's out of work time.

Unless somebody recorded it on their mobile , there is no evidence. Looks like the other manager is wanting to stir things up and blowing things out of proportion.

Bit of advice please. I'm a manager where i work and a couple of weeks a go went out on a work night out - drinks were paid for etc. Anyway i had agood night out with some other managers from the same place went home and thought nothing about it.
Today my boss collars me saying " Five minutes i need a word with you"

Apparently another manager had emailed her to say that i had slagged off a couple of the staff in the office saying i said that we should get rid of them. Now i can't remeber saying this or if anyone else had heard me say it if i did say it. Now these staff members i've allegedly slagged off know about this and have been pressuring this other manager to make a complaint.

If this other manager does log an official complaint an investigation will have to take place that could result in a disciplinary hearing. Am i likely to be in the sh1t?

Assuming you did not slag anyone off, do you have any reason as to why this colleague is making this allegation?

About 3 years ago i was their manager - and to be honest they weren't up to teh job at the time so after extra training etc and not improving they were put on capability procedures by myself. With more training as a result of this they improved to where they became a valuedmember of the team and then became a manager as well. That is all i can think of.

And how did the staff members you allegedly slagged off find out about this? In your original post you mention they had found out...so I presume they did not hear anything at the time.

It was only managers out that evening, no staff were out - the staff involved found out off the manager in question.

I think I would just be honest, and say you had a few drinks, do not recall saying these things, and do not hold this view of these staff members. If I have said these things and upset anyone then I'm sorry. Honesty is often best.

Also, if I was your boss I would be more interested in why this other manager felt compelled to spread these allegations to other staff members i.e. the ones involved.

forget about it unless you get called in for a chat. if you get called in for a chat just say you never said that stuff, have no idea why anyone would accuse you of it and act irked as if this whole nonsense is preventing you from getting on with your job.

Your manager will just be ticking boxes to keep HR happy and if a formal complaint is made statements will have to be made, interviews, unions etc no-one in your company will want to bother with that rigmarole.

In conclusion, shrug like a Frenchman, act a combination of slightly puzzled and irked and get on with your job as if nothing happened.

So glad I work in an environment where everyone calls everyone else a prick on an hourly basis & no one takes a blind bit of notice.
And if they complained they'd be told "Don't be such a prick".

 Absolutely.

Couldn't put up with all that shit.
