You're certainly not the only one who thinks so, there are many Sunderland fans who'd agree with you. The simple truth is we need him. I think he's a much better player than many outside Wolverhampton realise.
As others have said, Wolves have money and don't have to sell, which pushes the price up further. A lot of Sunderland supporters are nervous about the coming season, and the arrival of Fletcher (albeit at an inflated price) will be welcome.
I hope Ashley Barnes doesn't leave. I'm eagerly awaiting an additional forward at B&HA, not a replacement.

Target strikers must be a bit hard to come by. Most clubs seem to need a mobile striker man who can defend at corners as well. It would not be the end of the world if he moves on, but it would leave us with a huge problem to fill the gap. Barnes first touch is not bad for a striker of his type. If he does not have time to think he has a good shot. If he dallies he seems to mess it up so he is not so good when we have to break down a side who park the bus. My view.

Noone to Cardiff was much more likely, given that we had more wingers than we could fit on the pitch and bench combined. We don't have any other players like Barnes.

If picked, I think Craig Noone could surprise a few defences early this season. Just get his shooting boots on. He can play the insider winger on the left. My tip to score against Swindon.

Why are people saying sell for 1-2million, Gus loves him, young, has shown potential, contracted, Wolves will have money. Unless we can get 3-5million out of them (yes I know silly money) then don't sell, we don't need to we need to step up a level on all terms including our bargaining when selling players. Is taylor-fletcher worth 8-10 times more than Ashley not for me we paid 3mill for CMS?

Personally I think its bull and he will be going nowhere.

Taylor fletcher is 31 so prob worth less than Barnes. Why?

All I can say is that I'm delighted by the positivity of this thread in regards to Barnes as a player.

After all the derisory comments he got last season it's good to know that he's now appreciated.

I wonder who the 2012/13 scapegoat will be...

Thar's an easy one - Dicker despite him being picked by Poyet, who doesn't know what he's doing - apparently.

Who would the KNOBHEADS pick on if he goes?
If this seasons starts with the form we ended last season with.... easy.... Poyet. If Poyet sticks to the same system we ended last season with..... easy..... Poyet. So, I guess what I am saying is the answer to your question is Poyet.

Why would a team just relegated from the premier league and looking to bounce back with millions to spend be interested in a player who is "too lightweight", "not up to this standard of football [league 1]", and will "find his level in the conference within a couple of years"? Why would any top championship side want a player who "never scores twice in a match", who would be outscored if replaced by "another striker who wasn't scared of his own shadow".

Why would wolves be after someone about whom fans have said:
"Shocking player. He is truly terrible."
"Could barnes finish his dinner? I'm not convinced...."
"doesn't contribute ANYTHING if he's not scoring"
"not good enough for this league[championship], requires far too much time on the ball, first touch is not good enough and he's slow."
"He only plays because of injuries to others"
"He is lazy, terrible touch, can't shoot, no awareness and always loses the ball."
I havent seen him offer ANYTHING else to the team. He cant hold the ball up, hes got shocking vision, constantly gives the ball away and his shooting bar the Cardiff strike this season has been poor. Hes had no composure infront of goal as he has proved for months now. He had 3 chances today, smashed two well over the bar and missed another basic chance on the volley. From what ive seen he offers nothing for us at this level & it staggers me the amount of people who rate him."
"Barnes doesn't even get into the positions to score the goals in this league though, plus CMS manages to actually look bothered, something Barnes has struggled with. I'm not expecting Barnes to work as hard as CMS does for 90 minutes, but he literally just does nothing."
"Barnes: Couldnt score in a Brothel? 2 clear cut open goals from 6 yards, the sort of thing your 10 year old son would put away with ease and both have gone sailing over the bar"

Gus will never let Ash go. He picked him when everyone was against him, so how much more is he valued in the team now he is consistently one of our best players?

Offer us the £12 million or so that you're getting for Fletcher and we'll talk.

On a more serious note, Gus will not let Ash leave unless he is really desperate to go. If he does want to leave, we know Wolves have just snaffled a massive sum of money, so I'm sure Tony would take advantage. Could probably squeeze £1.5 - 2 million out of them if we absolutely had to, though of course I'd rather Barnes stayed.

Why don`t they want McSmudger i would prefer to keep Barnes aswell

This is a minority. A minority I have not been part of.

I don't like seeing all those threads and statements on him. If I was Barnes and saw that...

Managers who are so f***ing stubborn that they refuse to change the style their team plays, even though is obvious its not working as one win in ten games while chasing promotion clearly proves, shouldn't throw stones in glass houses.

You always get one don't you.

Podolski or Fletcher.... its a no brainer, Fletcher is so over priced its unreal.
Are Arsenal going to sell Podolski then?
Podolski has had acouple of good tournaments for Germany (though he was dire at the Euros), he's never done anything consistently.

I don't really see what people's problem is with this Fletcher thing, he's a good player.

I guess it would take at least a couple of million for us to sell Barnes.

Funny thing is though, Gus telling everyone who critises Barnes doesn't understand football, was the same Gus who the then went on to oversee this promotion charge. I think his timing may have been a little out.

L 17.03.2012 Blackpool away L1-3 8 58
W 20.03.2012 Derby County home W2-0 4 61
D 24.03.2012 Nottingham Forest away D1-1 4 62
D 31.03.2012 Middlesbrough home D1-1 6 63
L 06.04.2012 Burnley away L0-1 6 63
L 10.04.2012 Reading home L0-1 7 63
L 14.04.2012 West Ham United away L0-6 8 63
D 17.04.2012 Watford home D2-2 9 64
D 21.04.2012 Birmingham City home D1-1 9 65
D 28.04.2012 Barnsley away D0-0 10 66

Yer, I think I'll take with a pinch of salt, a managers view, when the next thing he does is oversee form like that, whilst bluntly refusing to change style. Maybe he thinks his style was working during that run, and didn't need to change it. Anyone who went to Blackpool, Burnley and West Ham will tell you we were f***ing clueless in those games, and Poyet done nothing to chnage it. It took him 3 goals at West Ham to get his arse out of his seat.

But then hey Gus, its only Gary Dicker who fully understands how to play your system!! And thats direct from Poyets own mouth.......

See a little problem there, when by the managers own admission, only one player fully understands the system
