Councillers in Wolverhampton are looking at a proposal from a Labour councillor to drop 'Land of Hope and Glory' from the Remembrance Day celebrations this year on the grounds that it is 'too political'.

He wants to replace it with 'Sailing' by Rod Stewart

Unbe-f***ing-lievable

What is this country coming to?

Let him do it. As long as he is out there and identifiable for the November Ceremonies, I am sure the vets of the Midlands will show him exactly how much they appreciate his choice. I sincerely hope that any military band that fronts up sticks to their own playlist and not the media-seeking grovelling of some fourth-rate councillor.

Last Night of the Proms had this problem - the song is too militaristic for the left-wingers and glorifies the fact that we occasionally kick the arses of other countries. The simple fact is that we DO kick their arses, whether the lefties like it or not. We had the same here for T200 - the Trafalgar celebrations had to be between Red and Blue, rather than UK and France.

Trouble is, we have become confused between patriotism, jingoism and racism, and everyone is too scared to fly flags in case they cause offence. Personally, I have a flagpole/washing line in my garden which flies the Cross of St George 365 days a year, and I couldn't give a flying f**k what the rest of the country thinks about it.

And I effing HATE Rod Stewart's Sailing. Contrary to popular opinion, members of the RN/RM do not like or appreciate it, and think it should be confined to the discount-bin of history. (Actually, the councillor should remember that we used it continually in 1982 after we had stomped all over the Argentinians....):salute: :salute:

Are you still allowed to say Britain? Won't it cause offence to the countries we colonised? Why can't we all just get along?

I think this councillor will have to defer his success on this idea.

The whole country is too PC. If there was less political correctness there would be less problems because people would not be labelled as this that or the other, they would just be people and that would be nice!

My sister lives up there, she went to uni and married a native.
They are not allowed to call Christmas by its real name, they have to call it Wintermass, so not to offend the other religions.
They are not even allowed to put thosecandle things in the window because they apparently offends as well
I get angry every time i think of it.

It's muppets like that who keep the right wing extremist groups alive. Sad day. I'm pretty sure if the 'ethnic' communities were asked they'd say that they couldn't care less and in fact don't like this sort of thing as it will inflame opinion.

Wolves even draw every game so as not to offend any fans of other teams.

I was gonna say I thought it was ridiculous to change the song but then after reading this crap I'm going to get right behind it. In fact, sod 'Sailing', let's have 'Imagine' by John Lennon.

Oh dear, Looney won't like that. Storm in a teacup really made worse by virtue of the fact it was ever brought up.

I'd bet prepared to be a fair sum of cash that most of the peopel who are supposed to be offended don't give a toss.

Still, as a handful of English people (irrespective of race, colour or creed) live in countries like India and Pakistan I'm sure that hearing the National Anthems of their host countries are equally offensive and should be banned accordingly.

It says a lot about the shi... country we now live in when you cannot play the English National Athem without offending some tosser, who you probably allowed to move here from a third world country, and paid for them to do it.

The St George cross is now seen more as a racist statement, than the English flag, where as in most countries to flag your national flag is seen as a normal thing to do. Over here they'd make you take it down in case you offend any one!!

Any way I'm gonna stop now before I say something to get me in trouble.

Yep, I think we should adopt "Imagine" as a world anthem of peace. Ban everything for fear of insulting everyone else, and issue the entire world with a T-shirt that says "sorry".

John Lennon - absolute star, total visionary, but too tight to buy a Kevlar jacket.......

Very profound, sadly a cheap shot against somebody who didn't realise that there are so many 'misinformed people' in the world.

True. Sorry for the Lennon bit, was a little naughty and a very cheap shot.

Not necessarily "misinformed", but "differently informed". Different experiences to others lead me to the feeling that "give peace a chance" is as likely as expecting Hell's Snowball League to last more than a couple of minutes - probably a little jaded and cynical for my young years....

Don't get me wrong, I thought Lennon was on a different planet but he did mean well, no offence intended.
