Barwick wanted O'Neill last time around but was out-voted by the committee, this time it is solely his and Brookings decision. Perhaps if they'd have let Barwick get on with the job last time we wouldn't be looking for a new manager now.

I think Easy has won the arguement, by a country mile.
I've given the matter a lot of thought and decided that I really believe an English manager should have been appointed. What, after all, is the ENGLAND football team all about? National pride, that's what. And how can a bloody I Talian have the will and desire to make another country's national team a winner? And what happens if we play Italy? Sure, he'll really really really want to beat his national team!

Give it some more thought then.
Give me professional competance over "national pride" any day of the week. Out of the english candidates I'd probably have opted for Allardyce (he's inherited a complete basket case at Newcastle - nobody could turn that round in 5 minutes). But that said, I have no hang-ups about having a foreign coach. I just want a successful England team, and if we need some continental nouse to achieve that then so be it.
The notion that Capello would sabotage the England team if we ever faced Italy is ridiculous. Sven always tried to beat Sweden whenever we faced them, no question. He was just rubbish at doing it.

It was just one of those toe-curlingly embarrassing soundbites. I hope for Barwicks sake the interpreter didn't bother translating that remark for Fabio. I'm amazed there wasn't an audible groan from the massed ranks as he said it.

They have tacitly accepted that their own Football Coaching programme isn't good enough to produce an English Coach for England.

Sven never tried to beat anyone - he just capitulated to the "celebrity" of the players - and played the team from the Sports pages. He started the rot, and his appointment started us on the road to where we are now - up shit creek!

How anyone can give Barwick credit is beyond me. He spends weeks 'consulting' names in the game for top class managers and what does he come up with?Mourinho, Capello, Klinsman, O Neil & Lippi. He could have got that list by asking a pub full of crowded people. Add the fact that Barwick was responsible for signing Steve 'Worse than Graham Taylor' Mclaren in the first place and he more than anyone bears responsbility for me deciding whether to support Poland or Holland next summer.
If he had any semblance of shame he would have resigned with Mclaren. Instead we get Brian Wiggum Barwick in the hot seat for a bit longer.

How many times do I need to get it through your thick skulls?? Barwicks first choice was O'Neill, after that he approached Scolari, both of these the country would have been happy with but for differing reasons they didn't get the job, then we went for the outstanding english candidate in McLaren, who perhaps with a bit more support from the media and supporters would have qualified for the Euro's.
That's all history anyway, Barwicks brief was to go out and get a world class manager and a winner, how ever long it took, he's got a winner with a capital W and it's only took a month.

Well if O'neil was his first choice then
(1) He is is Lier (Steve Mclaren is my first choice) see above
(2) A Lame duck chairman if he cannot convince an 80 year old duffer who heads up the FA in Gloucester that O'Neil is better bet than Mclaren. No wonder he couldn't convine Scolari to come!

Would Barwick have approached Cappello if he had not already been quoted as saying he wanted the job? Of course not. The two people he approached are the two that the papers were clamouring for him to go for, hardly rocket science is it? He managed to miss Mourinho, and offers Cappello the most lucrative managers contract in history when the bloke is unemployed and desperate to take the job.
