With OEM software you can only install it or re-install it using the same motherboard.

If you tinker with computers and change your motherboard for a different one it's unlikely MS will let you activate your copy of Vista (OEM) a second time. Piracy etc etc.

That was M$'s original intention but they backed down under pressure from all the tinkerers: read here for more information.

Apart from the version running on Southern trains. anyone know of any other Win 95 still in use in companies?

I installed Vista on a wmware partition a few weeks ago to giv eit a look and all I can say is its gonna be a long while befor emy live PC changes from XP thats for sure, its unbeleivably buggy and add to that you feel like you are working on a cartoon PC, it feels like you are using a computer for idiots.

True enough for domestic-scale users. Not quite the same for big companies managing massive networks, who need to do more than a google search to sort out a major problem.

I have to disagree there I have worked for quite a few companies now covering a total user base of in the region of 55 thousand users. I can count the amount of times MS have been contacted with a support query on 1 hand. ALL of those queries were for topical / bug issues - not 1 was a business critical we need help now type of query. MS support contracts don't generally work like that anyway

Edit - Again I am just trying to emphasise my point that "unsupported" shouldn't scare people

Small number of our customers still use the previous rev. of our software on 95 OSR2, but thats the only time I've seen it recently.

but surely big companies dont ring up the microsoft help line when they have a problem they either employ or contract an expert to sort the problem out - those experts dont suddenly forget how to fix a program the day it become unsupported - although their fees may go up

Whatever happens with Vista and its uptake at least there are some viable alternatives that people can try this time around, if dont wish to pay m$ anymore money or can't afford a new pc.

And whats all this shit "LET THE WOW START NOW?"

The wow factor has been in OSX, and Linux for months if we are talking desktop effects.

Take a look at Beryl no competition
