Ok, so what's the difference then? Apart from it not being in a box.

With OEM software you can only install it or re-install it using the same motherboard.

If you tinker with computers and change your motherboard for a different one it's unlikely MS will let you activate your copy of Vista (OEM) a second time. Piracy etc etc.

Like they no longer 'offically' support NT4? That's never forced anyone to move to XP and so is still very widely used..

In fact my company (major high st bank, remaining nameless, likely as above...) will only be rolling out XP to the majority of our staff this year. Do think they'd bother spending all that money if there was any chance it would become obsolete soon?

That's what Connex said when they specified Windows 95 for the systems installed on their new trains.

I used to drive a MkI Cortina. It did a good job for my needs.

I see your point my Lord.

But, as we all know Connex ordered those trains, they then lost the franchise. Southern (or South Central at the time) took over and got lumbered with trains they didn't want (ditto Southeastern Trains). Southern apparently wanted the same trains SWT have, not sure which ones tho.

Anyway, more to the point. At this time Windows XP works very well. It hardly ever crashes, it seems fast and reliable for all thing net realated. I also enjoy playing games, some of which are quite complex, and it seems to handle those with ease.

With millions of PC's running XP, I can't see support being stopped anytime in the next 5 years.

Home users running XP will be supported until 2009. Business users have until 2014 before Microsoft no longer support XP.

Microsoft. Let all the suckers buy Version 1, they can bug and beta test it, then we can all pick it up in around a year once they have sorted the Service Packs out.

The "sound hacker hole" is on a par with phoning someone up and shouting "press the delete button, you arsehole" at them.

Personally, I think a Mac running Linux is a better option, but then again I also have a windup black and white telly, just to be different....

All Southern "377's" use Windows 95 (blame Connex)

First Capital Connect trains use wind power.

So the drivers can't even plug their iPods into the USB port to charge them up? Disgusting!

When I say Windows 95, it's a VERY stripped down version of it.

Ok, maybe stripped was the wrong choice of a word.

Basically all the drivers have access to is a program called MITRAC which is the nerve centre of the train. It's all touch screen so they don't actually do anything with 95, it's just show the spalsh screen when it loads.

Oh come on all you techies, what is all this clap trap about talking "unsupported" All "unsupported" means is that if you have a problem you can't ask microsoft for help fixing it AND we all know that if 1 person has had a problem there will be 10 others that have had the same problem and fixed it.

Everyone should be made aware that it is all scaremongering into buying the latest version!! True Microsoft does have a monopoly and that is wrong!

Having said all that I use and support Windows and it works for me, does everything I need it to, although I guess I don't know on what I could be missing out of

I'm not gonna bother with Vista until ServicePack1 comes out for it to fix all the bugs and other shite thats hidden deep inside. Plus i've read on numerous gaming forums that most games run 10%-15% slower, f*** that I'm happy enough with WinXP for the next 12-18months!

Agree, apparently it's a completely new code and as such is bound to have it's bugs. Then again it'll be available for a fiver from 'the bloke down the pub" soon; see what it's like then.

...and another thing, DX10 (Vista only) compatible cards are only just coming out now and are bloody expensive. Another good reason to wait until they become alot cheaper and games start using DX10 features, which will be a few months away yet for the first few games.

True enough for domestic-scale users. Not quite the same for big companies managing massive networks, who need to do more than a google search to sort out a major problem.

I suspect it will be running on 95 per cent of work computers by the end of the year. People will be familiar with it. They'll want it at home.

It's how the Bill Gates monopoly works.

XP isn't running on even 60% of work PCs SIX YEARS on. Vista won't hit 90% until 2015 at the very, very earliest.
