By the seaside in West Somerset
Yes -just retired and have a caravan down in the west country so hope to use that a lot more. Up until now I've spent a good bit of time working abroad so could afford to accept UK weather on holiday - not sure if that might wear a bit thin after a couple of years without sunshine but perhaps we will get a bit of decent weather at some point.
I do agree that service standards and value for money in the UK are generally poor compared to almost anywhere else I've ever been (Russia excepted) but the clincher for most people will always be the almost guaranteed sunshine of the mediterranean resorts. Even with the euro/pound rate almost at equilibrium it's relatively cheaper to go abroad than to holiday in the UK.

Have you BEEN to the Costa del Sol??

The only blokes I remember there were pissed Brits, lecherous Spanish waiters, and about 500 illegals from West Africa flogging knocked off Gucci belts and Tag Heuer watches out of suitcases

No hotties WHATSOEVER :lolol:

Yes. We'll be in Dorset and camping in Sussex

We have free accomodation in Cape Verde and love the Red Sea Riviera, but the thought of taking my one year old on a five-six hour flight fills me with dread.

I think you'll find 1 year olds on planes are generally fine. Just take a colouring / sticker book, and introduce them to an old dear and they're no trouble at all. My kids had flown to Tenerife twice each by the time they were 18 months old!

It's certainly easier than dealing with a terrified toddler camping in a storm.

We're taking the kids to the Scillies this year, however. Camping!

you missed out

chavs
chips
rats...

..."English" pubs
...restaurants that display their entire menu in pictorial format (egg & chips, burger & chips, paella & chips)
...wrinkly northern European women who should NEVER be allowed to remove any items of clothing at all, lying topless on the beach, getting horrendously burned and flashing their spaniels' ears at all and sundry

The Scillies are stunning, especially Tresco.

I don't think theres any need for people to be dismissive and pompous about Britain. It is incredibly diverse from the Cornish Harbours, as mentioned the Scillies, Some impressive scenery around Scotland, (Rannoch Moor, the Cuillin Ridge, Foinavan & Arkle mountains and the western Isles & Outer Hebrides). Towns and Cities full of history. The only downside is getting anywhere on our hopelessly inadequate roads, but then roads in the southern half of Italy for example are worse.

We'll probably go to Jersey (is that classed as UK?) for a few days I should think. It's nice there.

Because it's sunny

The last time I went to a British Topurist trap I said I'd never bother again. Apart from the heat I could have been in Blackpool for all I knew. Had to travel miles to find any local food, tiptoe across broken glass and used needles on the beaches and couldn't find anywhere for a decent drink except 'The Red Lion'.

To be fair, there are some amazing places in the UK. I think we underrate our own country massively at times. I'm not talking about dumps like Blackpool, but the likes of the Lake District, Devon & Cornwall, Northumbria, the Peak District etc have some beautiful sights.

I accept that the weather is variable to say the least, but not everybody wants to fry on a beach for a week. And it does rain in other countries too...

If you do stay in the UK you could take a look at MyCottageHoliday.co.uk- our holiday cottage review website. We've had an amazing response, with nearly 1,000 cottages added by this weekend, but we're still short of holidaymakers reviews.

If you have stayed in a UK self catering property in the last couple of years why not add a review of the place you stayed at? After all, if you were looking for a review before you book your next holiday cottage, you'd want to know what people like yourself thought about it.

(shameless plug, apologies, but on topic).

apart from plugging can you advise on appropriate accomadation?

Too right Edna. I've spent a week by the beach in the south of France in August - it rained every day. I also had a holiday in Sri Lanka (outside monsoon season) where it rained several days.

And it can be too hot too. I've been on holiday in Tunisia where it was just too hot to do anything.

I like British weather - it's just about right for me. My main problem with Britain has been the cost compared to Europe, but that doesn't seem to be an issue this year.

Not this one year old! A quick bite to eat at lunch time today was a trauma!
