We got back to Fareham on Saturday, at the same time as the Wales TRUNDLER was pulling in at the other platform.

The Greatest Fans in the World are so GREAT, they seemed to have a Police escort with them on the train. Presumeably to scatter rose petels at their feet and fetch their drinks.

Bugger - I wanted Liverpool to win the title until I read this.

By Nabil Hassan and Ben Smith BBC Sport

Portsmouth could receive a windfall of nearly £1m from Liverpool if they win the Premier League title.

The club inserted a special clause into Glen Johnson's contract when he left Fratton Park for Anfield in 2009.

Johnson, 29, joined Pompey from Chelsea in 2007 following a successful loan spell, with Liverpool paying £17.5m for the right-back two years later.

The money would be a boost for the League Two club, who have twice been in administration in the last four years.

The only potential obstacle to them receiving it would be that they have effectively been reformed as a result of the periods in administration and ownership has changed from Portsmouth City Football Club, when the Johnson sale went through, to Portsmouth Community Football Club.

The 'title-win clause' was most likely a decision by Portsmouth's then chief executive Peter Storrie.

However, when contacted by BBC Sport, Storrie said he did not recall inserting it, but added such a clause was not uncommon.

The very bestest leader of the best fans in the World has spoken. In true Churchillian style, the much admired John Westwood has issued a rallying call to his 'super' troops.

It truly makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. Every one of those brave and valiant 8,622 'super' fans should be awarded the VC, GC, OBE, knighted and ordained for their wonderful effort that night against the mighty Stockport. I salute them all - They are simply the best........

FOR DEFIANCE and fighting spirit it remains unsurpassed.

That’s John Westwood’s assessment of the famous ‘wall of noise’ clash against Stockport in 1998.

Now The News are getting behind Andy Awford’s call to recreate that famous atmosphere at Fratton Park once again.

Last Saturday, Awford delivered a war cry for the spirit of ’98 to return as Pompey fight for their place in the Football League. We’ll be doing our bit to rally the troops for the crucial clash with Hartlepool on Saturday.

This week, we’ll relive some of the famous atmospheres at Pompey games in years gone by.

And there is only one place to start on the front.

There were 8,622 fans in Fratton Park for Stockport in 1998, with Alan Ball’s side seven points from safety in division one.

But the noise created as Pompey battled their way to a 1-0 win will go down in legend. Endless chants of ‘Alan Ball’s blue and white army’ reverberated around the ground as the home side held on for a crucial three points – which sparked their run to survival.

Westwood was in the Fratton End that night, and knew he was part of something special.

He said: ‘When you walked in the ground, you could tell something was going to happen. There were 8,000 there and it was the real hardcore – and they weren’t giving up.

‘I had my bugle and Dave Anderson had the drum and we looked around us and could just see the whole ground chanting. That made us want to do it even more!

‘The spirit of this city when their backs are to the wall was summed up that night.

‘You could see the Stockport players were nervous when they were near the Fratton End.

‘And it seemed to me the Pompey players got 10ft taller. For defiance and getting behind the team, that atmosphere was the best. It was awe-inspiring.’

Westwood is right behind the The News campaign to bring back the wall of noise atmosphere.

He said: ‘Awfs has come back and understands this is a time for unity.

‘Alan Ball used to say people go to war from this city. When the chips are down the people of Portsmouth come out fighting.’

Wait. Hold on just a SECOND. There must be some sort of...mistake? A couple of digits missed off that figure, surely? Was the ground capacity reduced for safety reasons that night & 50,000 Greatest Fans In The World locked out?

Surely The Greatest can't have been down to a mere EIGHT THOUSAND. I refuse to believe it.

Time for a ABTS (Anyone But The Scousers) campaign ? What a terrible injustice for Liverpool having to write a £1M cheque if they win the Premier League. On a technicality the contract clause is invalid because the slate was wiped clean when they became a community club unless of course the money due is set aside to repay creditors.

I think you are becoming a bit obsessed with Pompey. They make more noise than we do btw.
