As a signalman, I couldn't count the boarding parties I was on. Its normal stuff. I guess mentioning the Bosnian war makes it sound a bit more 'heroic'. Just say 'I was bored being a sailor'.

Stop being a dick and trying to score cheap points, most people referred to serving down in 'Bosnia' or Yugoslavia in the early 90s regardless of if they ever went near the actual land or place. I've done the same as 'Patrolling the Adriatic enforcing UN resolutions relating to the conflict in the Former Yugoslavian Republic' tends to be a bit of a mouthful, people understand and remember more readily when you paraphrase it to 'Bosnia' which covered pretty much most of what happened down there, there's nothing heroic intended about it you're simply trying to belittle the guy posting it because he dared to disagree with you or have a different opinion.

I recommend the FT podcast, with David Allan Green - basically highlighting how Cummings' statement is the result of a lot of legal input (and in fact is highly unlikely to have been the work of Cummings at all).

I heard that, it was very interesting.

It was also the first time I'd heard DAG's voice; I always thought he'd have a posh voice and was really surprised to hear the Brummie accent

I learned today that the rose garden at No.10 is traditionally where the PM takes people to give them a rollicking. A tradition started by Churchill. Don’t know if that has any significance here but I feel it does.

This is one of the things they've been hiding behind with their use of language. DC et al say that he's done "nothing illegal", and this is true, precisely because (and please correct me if I'm wrong on this) the government didn't introduce legislation on the lockdown, they issued guidelines for the public to follow and, where necessary, the police to enforce. This police enforcement was due to another piece of legislation which widened their powers to respond to 'live' (as opposed to retrospective) issues.

If that is the case then he has got away with it then.

I agree with you once again.

(Although it's interesting to think that the three leaders of the you-know-what in 2016 are now being described as a slimeball, a cock-socket and a hypocritical liar - and that's mainly by the people who supported them.)
Yes, it's a difficult one isn't it. There's an old saying, I believe originating in India, that goes, "My enemy's enemy is my friend". Labour leavers, like myself, aren't comfortable voting for Johnson (as I did) on the grounds that all other parties would not 'get Brexit done' - or even happen at all; they'd either ignore the referendum (Lib Dems) or have 'People's vote' after 'People's vote' until they got the 'right' answer (Labour).
I'd never heard of Cummings until recently; Gove I always had down as a slimey *******, back-stabbing his hobby of choice. Boris - the lesser of several evils - but he still has my reluctant support (even more reluctant following his inexcusable defence of his slimey friend) - until we are finally and irrevocably out of the EU, then I'll be happy to join in the back stabbing (by voting Labour, not for Gove)!

Absolutely no hint of dirty doings and threats being made to the BBC about the licence then ............................ absolutely not. Dominic Cummings would never advise such chicanery. Absolutely not.

Not in this country, no never...............................

They considered it a minor breach so no further action will be taken.

However, they found he DID breach the lockdown regulation, of which he was an architect, so surely his position is untenable?

They also conclude that the trip to Durham in the first place wasn't a breach. So, I suspect he may just apologise for his trip out to Barnard Castle with a 'which was the best thing to do in the situation we were in' type comment. BoJo and the rest will then say the main issues were within the law, and the BC breach was only minor, so that's the end of the matter.

I would hope that Durham Police are also checking out other potential journeys he could have made in the time period - like going to his in-laws at Wooler and so on.

I have to say firstly, that I agree with just about everything you have posted on this thread.

As you yourself explain above, you looked at the general election and decided that the single factor 'getting Brexit done' overrode any reason to vote for anyone other than Johnson.

At that point, Cummings role and power in Johnson's Government was well known and well documented, as was Johnson's inability to 'do detail', work long hours or tell the truth. The number of senior and experienced Conservative politicians who had already left the party, or wouldn't serve in a Johnson Government was also well known. And it wasn't a referendum, it was a vote for the Government you want to rule for the next 5 years.

All this information was available, and you weighed up the issues and decided how you were going to vote, as is your (and everyone's) democratic right.

At that point you decided who you wanted to Govern the UK for the next 5 years and, I'm afraid however I put this isn't going to sound good, but that is exactly what you have now got.

and you don't know Twitter.

Twitter is whatever you want it too be, it's the gateway to your thing.

It turns out my thing is 'dumb drunk people', Dutch cycling infrastructure, The Darwin Awards, Barry Glendenning, a small amount of professional cycling, people selling mirrors, QI, films, more cycling, BBC archive, parts of The Guardian, left leaving American politics, a little bit more transportation, karma and so on.

For someone who loves his niche music to then write off one of the worlds biggest content provider of niche music is somewhat baffling.

Where your ire should be directed at Twitter is it's incredibly bubble forming.
You end up thinking the whole world thinks like you, see me, cycle culture & NSC as a prime example.
But even then with your love of the 'ignore function' on here that's gonna be a tough needle to thread.

:lolol:

Yes I was just chatting with a mate who uses it, and his bubble is making him think that the whole country is polarized over Cummings and obsessed and of extreme viewpoint (he follows some extreme left and right gobshites for amusement). I had to remind him about the algorithm and the resultant bubble, and explained that the nationwide view of Cummings and Boris is much more nuanced, which gives a different context to the surprising vitriol of some ordinarily sanguine folk.

My point was that the Stamer twitter feed isn't evidence that Starmer is all over Cummings like a rash. I'm not the only person with this view. :bigwave:

Its a lose lose for the Tories hanging onto Cummings.

Erodes public trust in them and reduces their authority, whilst simultaneously damaging their party

Starmer doesn't need to do anything, just lie low and let the whole thing play out
