The ticketing system is an absolute farce too. Look at this link and how complicated it is!

http://www.buses.co.uk/tickets/saver.aspx

Edit: Here's an example

TYPE OR DURATION OF SAVER TICKETCOST
1 DAY SAVER on your smart phone (download App here)£3.90
1 DAY SAVER on the key (from this website) (or 1 Stop Travel)£3.90
1 DAY Scratch-off SAVER (from 1 Stop Travel)£4.40
1 DAY Explorer (from bus drivers)£7.00
1 DAY CitySAVER (from bus drivers)£4.60

I'm sure that people who want to be on and off buses all day think they're great value. Like tourists, for instance, or travelling salesmen who cover a very small area or bored pensioners or, um, well, no-one really. For the rest they're expensive. And for those who live anywhere in town an absolute rip-off.

Bus companies say that they have to increase their fares when the price of oil increases, yet they never reduce their fares when the price of oil decreases.

During the summer, when I had to traipse up to the hospital before going to work, I found the All-Day Saver thing excellent value.

Beaconsfield Road to the Old Steine - Old Steine to the RSCH - RSCH to the Old Steine - Old Steine to Lewes - Lewes to Elm Grove. That's when it comes into its own.

Similarly, if I was going into town for a couple of hours, taking into consideration all sorts expenses involved with owning and using a car - it's still cheaper.

The majority of people you see getting on the bus use the Key or an All-Day Saver. To say that the buses are the sole preserve of the people you mention is utter nonsense.

The cost of diesel 10 years ago on average was 78p and is currently on average 140p. So unless you thought the price 10 years ago was too high then you don't really have much on an argument.:

The bus company use this statistic all the time to justify price increases, which is valid to a point. However, you have to look at the whole of the business and question whether ALL the costs have increased by 100% over the last 10 years to justify a doubling of their prices. Have labour costs increased 100% in 10 years? Have other materials such as bus parts and new buses increased 100%? Have office, bus depot and other warehousing costs increased 100% in this period?

Probably not.

.

I don't think you can use the cost of running a car as an example of comparive value on a one-off trip. And isn't part of the battle to persuade car drivers to use the bus? which they won't do because without getting an app or visiting a specific shop it's £4.60 and you can park in Brighton for a fiver for a couple of hours. And that's if there's one of you

B&H Buses replace the oldest buses in their fleet every year , 20 brand new buses works out at between £3M to £4M.

The Key smartcard can now be topped up by 9pm for use the following day.

I know you can get plus bus on individual train tickets but can you add it in to the price of weekly/monthly/yearly tickets?

Integrated tickets exist in London, where there are several different train and bus operators.

Yes on weekly and monthly, I've done it myself. Don't know about annual as I don't buy that long. London Road to Falmer for a week is £15.90 on the train or £25.90 on the train with bus for the whole city. There's a small saving if you buy monthly, but it's not a huge amount.

I can understand B&H Buses re-investing some of their £6m annual profit in new fleet - including those whose engines cut out when they stop at stops and red lights.

It would be nice if they could re-invest some of that profit in reduced fares.

Stagecoach Grimsby have some buses whose engines cut out when stopped at a bus stop or at red lights but they're not hybrid buses :lolol: My weekly megarider only costs £9.70 but the two main disadvantages are the fleet is only a quarter of the size of B&H Buses and having to live here.

So all i have to do to get a cheaper (but still expensive) return is get one of these smart cards at some point previously and then buy it the day before I want to travel? What a deal

You can now. London services are under the Transport for London umbrella though, should their be something similar in Sussex then the same would happen.

But that's the point. Most people only want to go into Brighton and out again. A return from Preston Park/Hollingbury/Moulsecomb/University shouldn't be £4. We're subsidisinng to an insane extent people who are paying the same amount to get to Eastbourne and back

£3.20 for 1 day and £12 a week in Eastbourne/Hailsham in a MUCH smaller area - Stagecoach are awful for high fares. It really isnt that bad.

Most people use the bus frequently anyway, so have weekly tickets, which works out bette value for money. The BusID card for Under 18s/19s is a great thing too, something I dont think any other companies do.

So all i have to do to get a cheaper (but still expensive) return is get one of these smart cards at some point previously and then buy it the day before I want to travel? What a deal

Or you buy it on your smartphone 5 minutes before you get the bus. You can buy the ticket for The Key anytime, it only gets activated when you first use it.

I didn't say buses are the sole preserve of those people. Just that the majority of passengers are being ripped off. If the bus company wants to look after its customers so much, why is it still impossible to get a discounted single journey on a smart card after all this time?

Have you considered sending off an e-mail to B&H Buses suggesting a £1.50 single fare that can be downloaded to a smartcard or mobile ?
