Wilkins and his substitutions

Deano seems to have got plenty of stick on here for not being able to turn a game with his subsitutions (i.e. Leeds), yet they seem to have made an impact on several games (Southend, Hartlepool, Cheltenham, Luton). #

The detractors always say that the subs in questions should have started, but big Bas always seems to have a certain panache when he comes off the bench and Loft seems to be becoming something of a super sub.

So, has Deano been proved right or is his team selection wrong in the first place?

Subs have been used better of late ..I felt that early in the season they were predetermined regardless of how the game was going...the last few games the subs have made an impact..trouble is we all have differing opinions ..the Walsall game I thought it should have been Elder not Cox that replaced Forster..like for like but DW made his decision and on that occasion it didnt come off...its all so easy with hindsight.

I was unsure why he swapped Fraser for Loft - Fraser seemed to have had a reasonable game. But you can't deny it was a good move. What bugs me about Wilkins is that he doesn't seem to make other (non sub) changes - why doesn't Cox swap over to play on the right for a period? Why don't Baz and Forster swap around more?

He's getting better, no doubt about it - the problems come when we can't seem to make a breakthrough and a game is goalless...he often appears 'scared' i feel to change anything, in case a cock up costs us and he gets the blame.

its getting better - sometimes just wish he would do it earlier. like today, it was pretty obvious we were WANK going ofrward, and he should have changed it earier

Last time he came on he got an assist and played quite well.

Today he came on and scored.

So i doubt he's being ironic

Doug Loft was the last pathetic signing of the discreditred McGhee regime. The boy has ABSOLUTELY NO PLACE in the Albion set-up going forward. It's a disgrace he was offered another year in the Summer and just further emphasises that the manager is no smarter than the smart fan. A goal today changes absolutely nothing.

he won us three points at hartlepool with his tackle to set up the goal, and today was the ONLY albion player to get a shot on target

if he needs to be shipped out, then on todays performance, and the hartlepool one for that matter, so do the rest of the team. if o'callaghan is out on tuesday, loft should start in place of fraser

You're being a bit harsh on the lad. May not have been a great signing, but he's on the fringes of the first team.

I thought Wilkins delayed his substitutions for far too long today. At 60 mins he should have taken Cox and Forster off for Loft or Reid and Elder. We were playing soooo badly that sustititions were obviously required.

You're being IRONIC right?

Hmm. He's made a match changing impact in his last two appearances... you work it out.

Personally, I'm not convinced about Doug Loft, but he certainly has ability and can do the kind of things that a players like Hammond and Fraser can never do. I believe giving him a chance this summer was the right decision. Whether he will ever be more than a flash in the pan is hugely debatable but you never know.

What a load of shit. You've practically written the man off on the grounds that he was signed by McGhee.

He's had some good sub performances, and some not so good ones. The only real shocker he's had was that game last season (Northampton was it?) when he was dragged off after 15 minutes, having been played out of position. We don't really know what he can do - but this season, he's showing potential. Give the boy a break. You are presumably showing patience with the likes of Cox and Hammond who've been crap this season, so try it with loft - he's kept us in the cup for crying out loud.

Loft would be free from criticism if his name was Nathan Elder.

....and when Elder came on today he looked like he had never played football before. Cox and Hammond were very poor (again) today and Jake faded after half time.

Fair enough. For sure I'm being harsh, but only cos I've never ever seen anything of him on the pitch that even whispers' one for the future'. My fault, I'm sure. Tho i was right about Slo-Joe, and I'm 100% sure I'm right about Doug Loft. tho it's a game of opinions aye? Yours will catch up with mine in due course
