[Football] Why we have our bottle tops confiscated

To be fair, Digne had just taken the corner, then Buendia ran over to celebrate/thank him. Digne is clearly going to be a target for abuse today.
But yes, maybe the players should all run toward the centre circle upon scoring to avoid missiles. Next time I go to a Panto I'm gonna hurl bottles of drink at the villain as that is clearly now acceptable.

Oh no you’re not.😮😊

I still think confiscating bottle tops is over the top. They are confiscated as they are an easy target and easily removed. Let's have consistency and confiscate coins then. If people want to luzz something, and they don't have a bottle, then they'll luzz something else i.e. a coin.

I was being facetious. I was mainly expressing my disgust at the luzzing.

it doesn't stop it being thrown, but with no cap it will very quickly empty and be less of a potential threat. Distance will be reduced substantially and when/if it hits its target it will do less potential harm

There is also the likelihood of someone in the crowd taking offence as the bottle covers anyone in its path with its contents-and the reaction to that is likely to be a discouragement from doing it again!

Bottles full with caps have been seen to have been thrown several times on tv matches recently, each one validating Brighton's ban more and more. Its gone from a very rare event to a very frequent one at plenty of games this season

Although the thread title was somewhat facetious, you are of course correct. Also, the sort of dimbot who throws a bottle is not the sort of planner who would smuggle a spare bottle top into the ground for when an opportunity arose to luzz the bottle. I doubt much actual thinking goes into this sort of tomfoolery. So the top ban would appear to be of value; if someone has recently thrown a capped bottle onto the Amex pitch then I stand corrected.

However, this thread was not meant to be about bottle tops. Anyone who still hasn't got over the humiliation of having a bottle top confisciated at the Amex needs to grow up. I am hearing now that the moron has been arrested. Good.

I can count on one hand the away players who have goaded us home fans over the years. That is because it’s so rare.

McGleish
Hammond
Nolan
Ward-Prowse
Foden.

I’ve no time for it. It is completely unnecessary. There will always be idiots at a football game and players should be able to rise above it.

I thought it was a Barber over reaction moment, never seen a bottle thrown before the ban at the Amex. When we scored against Palace the other night the poor fella sitting in the disabled section got soaked as someone’s bottle was knocked off the ledge in the mayhem, It ruined his night covered in sticky pop.

Unfortunately while you have morons in the crowd prepared to throw stuff, the bottle top ban will be just the start.

In Italy they also confiscate belts, and then it’s not a stretch to see them confiscating coins (already we have a cashless ground so why bring coins?), mobiles (could easily throw a cheap pay as you go phone if so inclined), and what’s next - ban heavy shoes/boots etc?

That’s happened before..

I understand your point (not that it is relevant to the main point about luzzing bottles, stoppered or not at players heads), but would it really have been better for the old fellah if a bottle with a top on had been knocked off the ledge onto his head? ???

Three degrees of separation: (1) any issue and (2) Barber OUT!

I remember seeing someone I know escorted out at Oldham for throwing his phone onto pitch side

And my dad told me that when he was a Millwall follower in the 1930s, the dock boys threw sharpened coins onto the pitch.

None of this, of course, makes today's nonsense remotely acceptable.

Unfortunately it takes only one dick head and the rest of us suffer.

Another three degrees of separation (and I mean connections, not justifications, 'it wouldn't have happened without' not 'it happened because'): Millwall dick heads on the pitch, repeatedly - Thatcher introducing fencing between the pitch and the fans - Hillsborough. And the original sin? Dick headery.

And we live in much more risk averse times, now. The argument about bottle top bans being bad because it doesn't stop fan misbehavour is irrelevant - that's not how things work anymore. In the 60s people argued that some clown, doing 100, losing control and smashing into other cars killing people when sober, which wouldn't have been prevented by drink driving laws, was an argument for opposing drink driving laws. These days, we are so risk averse, we take less note of whataboutery. (Except when it came to Covid restrictions and the ease of ignoring them, of course).

And back to the point - someone luzzing a near full bottle at a player's head at foorball is so wrong. Full stop.

Perhaps if he gets a custodial sentence we might be able to talk about bringing back bottle tops. I'm not holding my breath about either....

Thrown at goal celebrating away players.

The luzzer got about a 6 month ban.

It's pretty stupid of professional footballers basically goading the crowd

If half a dozen away fans were in the North and made a racket when they scored, you'd expect them to be thrown out

It doesn't sit well with me,even when Maupay does it
Tensions run high at football matches and the players should be more responsible

To me though it cuts both ways because before and during the game Digne and Gerrard had been taking a lot of abuse from the Everton faithful so i understand why when Digne supplied the corner from which they scored why they wanted to celebrate with him and give a little bit back .
Although i think that two wrongs do not make a right i also think that fans should not give anyone a load of grief if they don't understand that it may well come back to bite them on the arse and should accept that !
I would hope we can all agree on here that whatever the provocation luzzing a full bottle at any player is wrong and needs dealing with accordingly

Considering it’s about a 30cm drop probably.

One of the reasons it was stated bottle tops were banned was that an empty bottle with a lid on was a trip hazard on the stairs. Pretty sure that was in a programme sermon once.
