[Football] Why was Grealish subbed off after 20 odd minutes last night?

Southgate said in an article why he did it........ When Denmark go behind they often push 4 attackers up top and lob balls in, so he wanted the extra defender and to effectively have a back 5 when Denmark attack.

This. Southgate said in a post match interview. They knew how the Danish change systems when they’re chasing a game so he wanted an additional defender. And he didn’t want to take Sterling off (or Kane, as a given). So as he saw it was between the guys who came on (Foden and Grealish).

Very ballsy move. Hard to argue it as it worked.

Good job Pickford got down to tip that shot round the post in the last knockings, or that decision to take off Grealish might have been being viewed in a very different light today.

Its always small margins that define tournaments, and thankfully (for once) England have so far been on the right side of them.

In the time that he was on the pitch he already bagged this award, job done!

I didn’t think it was the right move - but it seems to be. Although we’ll never know what would’ve happened if he’d left him on - could have been a 3rd. But in Gareth we trust, and he’s got most things right this tournament eh :)

Yes - when we went 2-1 up I thought the Danes looked mentally and physically spent and thought England would push on and add one or two more, urged on by the 60k crowd. So I was surprised to see us shut up shop but given what was at stake I probably shouldn’t have been. The result proves it was the correct decision.

It's a consequence of being allowed six substitutes (including extra time). You can do that kind of thing - a small way towards the American Football offence/defence players.

You can't blame the manager from taking advantage of the rules.

Yeah, spot on. In normal times we'd would have already brought Foden, Grealish and Henderson on, and that would have been our lot. But the extra subs mean you can make wholesale formation changes late in games, meaning that subs can be tactically subbed.

Have to say I was certain it would be Sterling, just because subs don't get subbed very often. But Southgate said he wanted to keep his pace on, so it had to be one of the subs to go. Fair enough.

I still would like Grealish to start on Sunday, need someone to give the diving Italians a taste of their own medicine, plus I'm not totally sure what Mount brings to the party. But I'll leave it to Gareth....

Yes, like many I thought, "Oh sh*t, he's going defensive to protect a one goal lead." Didn't like it at the time - but we won. End of.

Southgate obviously being a true gent wanted to let Denmark back in the game, trouble is they went down to 10 men, I think he apologised to the Denmark manager afterwards.

Tactical sub. I'm not sure Southgate was aware that Jensen had to go off and Denmark would play with 10 men, in that case he would probably have kept Grealish just to dominate possession.

Bit of a liability with his diving and theatrics, decent call to get him off.

This is especially the case in a tournament, but I just don't get why you and probably a majority adopt this view. I know you'll respond that another goal provides that additional protection against contingencies, but solidity in the final phase of a game is key. We got to the PL courtesy of it, although not exclusively due to it, granted. In a tournament, you just need to get past the current opposition, you don't need to humiliate them. If you want to win a tournament, you need to devise a plan to get through it, and to conserve as much energy as possible. I've never witnessed an England manager recognise this and implement such a strategy from the outset of that tournament. Southgate has done this. Sure, we might say he's had a bit of luck, but I'm not entirely convinced that is the case -- all of the results England have got have been deserved for me.

We've done everything we can to control every game and dictate the tempo - it's when a game gets out of control that a lot of physical and mental energy is spent.

If there was a manual on "How to approach a major tournament" - Southgate has followed it almost to the letter.

As you say, how we've looked this time makes me realise quite how badly prepared we have been at a number of other tournaments.

Continuing our clean-sheet performance is essential - we can nick it one-nil, but if we fall behind we will struggle.

I thought the commentator said Grealish went off to protect a niggle?
But tactically made sense too ....
